Long before taking on Carol Peletier in The Walking Dead, Melissa McBride was busy building her career brick by brick—but ironically enough, the 60-year-old actress was making a living not in front of the screen, but behind it, working as a casting director before getting her big break on the famed post-apocalyptic drama. Though the series in which she originated the role of Carol has since concluded, McBride hasn’t hung up her zombie-fighting gear, as she joins Norman Reedus in The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, which premieres with a third season on September 7. Here, take a look at the life and career of Melissa McBride, from a commercial actress to certified zombie slayer. 

The early career of Melissa McBride

Born in Kentucky, McBride’s first foray into acting was actually in various commercials before making her debut in a 1993 episode of Matlock, setting the pace for the rest of her career throughout the 90s. Throughout the decade, you could catch her making appearances in shows like In the Heat of the Night, American Gothic, A Season in Purgatory, Walker, Texas Ranger and later, Dawson’s Creek. 

Throughout the 2000s, McBride was acting while simultaneously working as a casting director, seen in films like The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys (2002) and The Mist (2007). Despite having a foot in both worlds, McBride enjoyed her time as a casting director, and she revealed back in 2018 that while in the casting director role, she didn’t have her sights set on an acting career. 

“I hadn’t really thought about it, I’m kind of drifty like that, and that was so awesome, having the experience of casting,” she told Geek Chic Elite. “It was really wonderful at the time. I had thought of maybe directing later, who knows? My attention span can be challenging. I like to be in hyperfocus mode and casting was that for me at the time, just the pace of it. I got to experience a lot of what I enjoy while casting, so I was happy with that. I am a firm believer in never say never but the casting, that was great at the time.”

It was in 2010 that McBride originated the role of Carol Peletier, a timid mother and wife living under the thumb of her abusive husband, who, after enduring much turmoil amidst the world as we know it coming to an end, grows into a fierce and crucial member of the show. 

“It’s been incredible to play this character that started out as Carol did. So much of the strength that she has willed herself to have is honoring the loss of Sophia and all that she was unable to do to save her in the beginning,” McBride told AMC, referring to her character’s daughter, whom she lost early in the series. 

“I think she wants to wear that armor for Sophia. To be able to play this character that has found the strength in herself, however that came to her, for me personally feels really, really, really good. To be able to inspire. This character has inspired a lot of people, including me. So in that regard it just feels really good. I’m proud of her.”
