Parfums de Marly is one of the top luxury perfume brands in the game—just search the name on social media to see all the fragrance stans who are obsessed with the entire range—so whenever you hear the murmurings of a new launch, you just know it’s going to be good. Castley, the latest addition to the collection, is no exception.

True to the brand’s signature style, it’s a modern classic. The French maison, which takes inspiration from 18th-century France when designing its fragrances, has perfected the art of making traditional notes relevant for today.

Pegasus, for instance, blends bitter almond with vanilla, while Layton lifts patchouli with lavender and geranium. This time, though, it’s pepper and ginger—two spices that were highly sought-after within the French court in the 1700s—being treated to the Marly makeover.

“Castley is inspired by the great explorers of the 18th century—the free spirits of the French court who pushed the boundaries of their time,” says Julien Sprecher, the brand’s founder and creative director. “[I chose to highlight pepper because it was] one of the spices that became established during that time as a rare and luxurious ingredient.”

Though spices were Sprecher’s starting point, it’s the contrasting notes that deliver the contemporary edge—namely bergamot, petitgrain lemon, and amber labdanum. On first spritz, the bergamot and petitgrain lemon give the pepper a lively finish, while the warm woody accords of the amber labdanum come through on the dry down. The end result? A sophisticated, addictive blend that feels like a modern riff on a traditional men’s cologne— and has all the makings of a hit fragrance.

It strikes the perfect balance in so many ways. It’s warm without feeling wintry. It’s refined without feeling stuffy. And it works for pretty much any situation you can think of. It’s understated enough for a day at the office (there’s nothing worse than a headache caused by someone else’s overpowering fragrance) but strong enough for an event where you want to make a big first impression. You can basically wear it day in, day out, and be confident that your fragrance nails the brief no matter what.

It’s no surprise that we’re predicting it will be the must-have fragrance of the season. Lucky for you, you’ll be ahead of the game and can claim bragging rights when it’s the next big thing. You can thank us later.
