Suzanne Jackson’s SoSu Line Pulled from Boots – What's the Untold Story Behind This Sudden Retail Shake-Up?

So, here’s a head-scratcher: What happens when a top-tier pharmacy chain hits the brakes on an entire beauty line just as the holiday shopping frenzy gears up? Boots just pulled the plug on Suzanne Jackson’s SoSu products across all 85 stores and their online presence – yes, everything, including that tan range Dripping Gold. Why? Because a safety alarm sounded loud and clear about some seriously concerning arsenic levels in one of her eyeshadow palettes. You read that right – arsenic. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill product recall; it’s a full-on safety recall flagged by the EU’s Rapid Exchange of Information System (RAPEX), shaking the foundations of a brand that many had come to trust. Boots has urged customers to stop using these products immediately and return them for refunds, while they await clearer assurances from SoSu on safety standards. Makes you wonder: in the race for market share and festive sales, can brand loyalty withstand a scandal that hits so close to home? Dive deeper into this unfolding story here: LEARN MORE.

Pharmacy chain Boots has removed Suzanne Jackson’s SoSu beauty products from their shelves over “safety concerns”, writes Niamh Walsh.

The pharmacy and beauty emporium has taken the drastic decision to totally remove from their 85 stores nationwide and their website every one of Suzanne’s products, including her tan range Dripping Gold.

In a statement to EVOKE, a spokesperson for Boots confirmed they no longer stock SoSu branded products saying: “Boots is recalling Sosu Peach Dreams Eyeshadow Palette in response to a safety warning from the EU’s Rapid Exchange of Information System (RAPEX).

“Customers that have bought this product are advised to stop using it immediately and return it to your local Boots store for a full refund.

“As a precautionary measure, we have removed all other Sosu Cosmetics products from our shelves and boots.ie, until we have further assurances from the brand about its safety practices.”

The move to remove all of SoSu’s products comes just before the Christmas shopping season, where makeup and other beauty offerings are top-selling gifts and rake in massive profits.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that an eyeshadow palette produced by SOSU Cosmetics had been recalled due to the presence of arsenic.

An EU rapid alert system for dangerous non-food products, Safety Gate, issued a warning over the Peach Dreams eyeshadow palette, by the Irish cosmetics brand founded by Suzanne Jackson.

The product description reads: “Eyeshadow palette with eight peach-coloured powders. Product sold online, in particular via sosucosmetics.com.

“The warning notes that the palette ‘has an excessive concentration of arsenic in some of the shade powder colours.”

These were measured as 0.94mg/kg in ‘Creme’, 1.2mg/kg in ‘Sorbet’, and 0.57mg/kg in ‘Peach’.

Safety Gate adds that arsenic ‘may cause cancer, may damage fertility or the unborn child, causes damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure’.

A statement on SOSU Cosmetics’ website reads: “SOSU Cosmetics advises that The Peach Dreams Eyeshadow Palette has been withdrawn.

“The palette dating back to 2022 is no longer being produced and any residual palettes are withdrawn from retail outlets.

“The withdrawn palette carries the batch number 20210405 & 20220420, model number SOSU0992 and barcode 5391537262098 as it was found to contain an elevated level of arsenic.

“While there have been no reported health concerns, anyone with this palette is advised to dispose of it or return for a full refund by contacting [email protected].

“Our loyal customers are our number one priority, and we can confirm that we no longer use the manufacturer of this palette.

“We take our responsibilities to our customers very seriously and have already started implementing enhanced ingredient checks and additional third-party testing to ensure every SOSU Cosmetics product is fully compliant with EU regulatory standards.”

When asked for comment, a representative for SoSu said, “We are not in a position to comment as of now.”
