Celebrity hairstylist Jawara Wauchope knows a thing or two about beautiful hair. After all, he’s the mastermind behind the iconic hair looks of celebrities like Rihanna, Beyoncé, and Gwyneth Paltrow and even the runways of Loewe and Ralph Lauren. If Wauchope puts his stamp of approval on a product, it’s worth the hype.
Now, the Jamaican stylist is putting his stamp of approval on not just one product but a whole brand as the newly appointed international brand ambassador for Hair Rituel by Sisley. We caught up with the stylist to get an inside look at his creative process, where he searches for inspiration (or, more specifically, which Parisian cafés), and why he loves old-lady scents.
Inspiration, Everywhere
My inspiration is drawn from a lot of different places. I start by people-watching. I love to travel and look at things—go on excursions to places I’ve never seen before. I go to Paris quite often, so I love to people-watch there—particularly at Hotel Costes, or even at a random café like Café Flore or Café Charlot. My family is from Jamaica, so I love to people-watch there. Also, Scott’s in London is a restaurant where I will sit and watch. Even Ibiza—I go quite often.
I love to watch old films and music videos and go to museums. I love movies like Imitation of Christ, Mommie Dearest, any Quentin Tarantino film, Gone With the Wind, and anything from the ’90s. I’m a person who is inspired by different colors and shapes. I get inspired by my nieces and nephews quite often.
Reminiscing on Runways and Red Carpets
For me, anything that John Galliano did for Christian Dior in the early 2000s—plus what he did for his own collections—is classic. It made me kind of fall in love with the fashion industry. Also, Gianni Versace shows and the old Prada shows.
In the late ’90s and early 2000s, the red carpet was heaven for me, especially with people like Lil Kim, Mary J. Blige, and Gwyneth Paltrow on it. They all had different styles, but there was so much personality being shown on red carpets. I miss that. People were really showing themselves back then. I am a huge culture kid.
Best Beauty Looks of All Time
It has to be between Grace Jones’s and Farrah Fawcett’s looks. But I’ve also always loved Diana Ross’s big hair and Brigitte Bardot’s effortless style. Those are the hair looks that stood out to me the most. My mom also had great hair. She’s a reggae singer and has these long, long locks that I’ve always loved.
Desert-Island Products
I always have a Mason Pearson brush, no matter what. I also always have the Hair Rituel by Sisley Nourishing Oil—both for myself and for my kit, because I use it on me too. I use it like two or three times a day. I also love the Oribe Dry Texture Spray.
It’s All About Perspective
I use products in different ways. Like, I use the Oribe Dry Texture Spray in a different way than other people. I use hairspray to take out things as opposed to locking them in. It’s all about how I use items, and sometimes it’s in weird ways.
A Match Made in Heaven
One of the things I love about working with Hair Rituel by Sisley is that they have products for all hair types. One of the messages that I try to send through my work is to embrace all hair textures and the versatility of them, especially highly textured hair. To align with and be a worldwide ambassador for a brand that believes in individuality and diversity, and that makes products for textured hair, is one of the best things. I champion that in my work a lot, personally and professionally.
Travel Beauty Essentials
I am now in love with Dr. Barbara Sturm’s Eye Cream. Epilogic has a great serum that I use. I love Dr. [Chaneve] Jeanniton. I often use the Clarins Double Serum. And I’m a big fragrance head—like, huge. I think everyone who knows me knows I smell amazing. My favorites are Satin Mood from Maison Francis Kurkdjian and Ombre Nomade from Louis Vuitton. I buy the big and the small, and even a teenier size.
First Fragrance Memory
My grandmother used to wear Chanel No. 5 when I was a kid, and I loved it on her. I, for lack of a better word, love grown women’s scents. I have never really been attracted to the male alcohol-forward ones. Sometimes, she would wear White Diamonds from Elizabeth Taylor. She was very classy. I would steal the fragrances of all the women in my family, so when I finally bought a fragrance on my own, I bought a small Chanel No. 5.
On Spritzing Perfume
I spritz the Hair Rituel by Sisley Le Parfum on hair at the end of styling, both from afar and close up. I like the way it feels when you spray a little bit further away from yourself. I also really liked the scent of Le Parfum. I thought it was so chic in the bottle, but I love everything about it.
On Embracing Color
I want to bring back more colors, like fashion colors—not natural colors. I feel like we have gotten a little bit boring since the pandemic. People were trying things, like cutting off their hair, because they were in their houses, but I feel like we just got back into the normal. I’m looking forward to turning it up a little bit more and bringing it back to the unknown.
