Matheson has launched the 2026 Tim Scanlon Corporate Law Bursary, continuing an initiative established in 2022 to honour the late partner and former chairperson Tim Scanlon.
The bursary, part of the firm’s Impactful Business Programme, is open to undergraduate and postgraduate law students based at third-level institutions across the island of Ireland.
It aims to support aspiring corporate lawyers through a combination of financial assistance, professional experience and mentorship.
The successful applicant will receive a €5,000 bursary, an internship within Matheson’s Corporate department, and a specially selected piece of Irish art or craft in recognition of Scanlon’s passion for the arts.
Announcing the launch, managing partner Darren Maher said the initiative reflects Scanlon’s legacy within the firm and the wider legal community.
“Tim Scanlon was my personal mentor and friend, and his guidance shaped both my career and my understanding of what it means to lead with integrity,” Maher said.
“This bursary is deeply personal to me because it allows us to extend Tim’s generous spirit of mentorship to the next generation.”
Maher added that supporting students at a pivotal stage in their careers was a meaningful way to honour Scanlon’s impact by “investing in people, just as he invested in so many others at Matheson”.
Last year’s recipient, Tara Grattan of University College Dublin, described the award as transformative.
She said it had opened doors at a crucial point in her legal studies and highlighted Matheson’s commitment to nurturing emerging talent.
Applicants for the 2026 bursary must submit a 1,200-word essay addressing either the impact of increased sustainability reporting on corporate disclosure obligations, or whether the current EU regulatory framework strikes the right balance for Irish companies.
The closing date for applications is Friday, 27 March 2026
