It’s been said that what goes around comes around, and I’ve found that’s especially true of fashion and beauty trends. While ’90s and Y2K styles and the clean girl aesthetic have been wildly popular over the last few years, there’s a new makeup sheriff in town, so to speak. According to the runways and the internet, blue eyeshadow, a staple of the 1980s, is back with a vengeance in 2026.

According to TikTok, searches for the term “blue eyeshadow” have increased by 19 percent to date compared to last fall and winter, with stars like Zara Larsson regularly embracing highly colorful, embellished glam with blue tones. We previously reported that models on the Eckhaus Latta fall/winter runway wore Fara Homidi Beauty’s Essential Eyeshadow Refillable Compact in No. 61 Rumi. And at Marc Jacobs Spring 2026, icier blue shadows added extra dimension to the overall presentation, along with a smokier take on the trend seen on Tolu Coker’s fall/winter catwalk. “What makes blue shadow more wearable now is that it’s less about the heavy, frosty blue from the early 2000s and more about softer washes of color, denim tones, or a pop of blue liner,” celebrity makeup artist Lilly Keys tells Bazaar. And if you’re already going bold with your makeup look, why not go bolder? Along with swipes of pastel blue and violet shadow across models’ lids at Anna Sui’s Spring/Summer 2026 runway show, Pat McGrath and team also applied her brand’s Mothership I: Subliminal palette, along with swipes of the Dark Star Colour Blitz Mascara in Azure Allure (now each sold out), to their lashes for a maximalist effect.

Data scientist and Data, But Make It Beauty creator Madé Lapuerta explains that the blue eyeshadow trend has been gaining in popularity since the beginning of the year. As noted in a post on her Instagram page, it’s largely thanks to the revival of fun, playful makeup looks and to the influence of luxury beauty brands outside of Fashion Month. “My analysis of the popularity of blue eyeshadow included posts and searches mentioning this ‘blue’ keyword specifically. However, I did note that Chanel’s recent ‘denim’ blue beauty campaign likely influenced this overall trend rising,” she says. “The imagery of the campaign likely demonstrated to users fun, bold looks that could be achieved through blue shades of makeup, thus promoting the rise of blue eyeshadow in general. Over time, it will be interesting to see how the popularity of ‘denim’ moves, as well.”

Chanel’s must-have denim makeup collection may have sparked an uprising in blue eyeshadow buzz, but the true beauty of this trend is that it’s not one-size-fits-all. With an infinite number of blue shades to choose from, you can easily tailor your look to your skin tone, eye color, or personal preferences. “Denim blue has definitely had a moment because it’s incredibly flattering and easy to wear—it sits somewhere between neutral and color,” explains Naoko Scintu, global makeup expert for Dolce&Gabbana Beauty. “But more broadly, I think it’s blue in general that’s evolving. From soft pastel tones to deeper navy shades, there’s a whole spectrum being explored. I do think it will continue, but in a more subtle, personal way rather than one dominant shade.”

We understand if you feel intimidated by the idea of creating a vibrant makeup look. Keys advises starting with your eyes before applying foundation and concealer when working with deeper pigments. And to avoid potential under-eye fallout from powder shadow, Scintu and fellow artist Ash K. Holm suggest opting for cream formulas instead. “I find cream shadows to be pretty foolproof—you can easily apply with a brush or your finger, and you can build the look easily,” Holm explains. “If you’re using a powder shadow and want to minimize fallout, start with a small amount of product and layer to build the look. Always tap your brush before you apply it to your lid, helping to get excess product off the brush.” Since the makeup tone is already bold and beautiful, professionals recommend pairing your shadow of choice with a neutral your-lips-but-better lipstick shade or simple gloss, depending on your preference.

Practice makes perfect when it comes to your makeup look, especially since experts like Morgane Martini, global makeup artist for Christian Louboutin Beauty, don’t see any signs that the blue eyeshadow trend is slowing down. “Blue has been showing up beautifully on the red carpet and all over social media, too,” she explains. “One combination I’ve been particularly loving is the pairing of blue with mocha tones. It feels cool and a little unexpected. And honestly, this feels like part of a much bigger shift back to bold, expressive makeup overall, which, as a makeup lover, I’m thrilled about. The clean girl aesthetic has its charm, but color and drama are where my heart is.” Holm agrees, adding, “I think it’s going to be a big year for colorful eyeshadow in general, and I think we’ll see people playing with a range of blue tones on lids. We saw a few pops of color at the Oscars, and I predict we will see a lot more at the Met Gala this spring.”
