Lord John Grey has played an important role in both the Outlander books as well as the television series, and Diana Gabaldon saw a lot of potential when it came to expanding his story on the page. “Lord John Grey is an important character in the Outlander series, but he isn’t onstage all the time. And when he isn’t…well, plainly he’s off leading his life and having adventures elsewhere, and I could write about any of those adventures without causing complications for future novels,” explained Diana Gabaldon on her website. “Beyond that obvious advantage, Lord John is a fascinating character. He’s what I call a ‘mushroom’—one of those unplanned people who pops up out of nowhere and walks off with any scene he’s in—and he talks to me easily (and wittily).”

Gabaldon has written several stories and novellas that have chronicled Lord John Grey’s adventures outside of his direct Outlander storyline, including Lord John and the Private Matter, which was the first novel she wrote in the Lord John Grey series, Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade and The Scottish Prisoner, which features none other than Jamie Fraser. Gabaldon has also shared with the world Lord John and the Hand of Devils, which consists of three novellas about the character. Two other Lord John Grey stories, The Custom of the Army and A Plague of Zombies, appear in Seven Stones to Stand or Fall.

How to read the ‘Outlander’ novellas and short stories in order

According to Diana Gabaldon, her short stories and novellas were written in a way that allows them to be read as standalone books rather than paired in a specific order alongside her major novels. However, if you wish to read them chronologically, the author has outlined a list of all of her novellas and short stories and where they fall compared to the main books, available here on her site.

While we’ve loved the world Diana Gabaldon has brought to life on the page, she’s also shared her talents with her other stories and novels unrelated to Outlander. For a full look at her work, visit her website here—Your next read is waiting for you!
