In the two decades since its debut, the Givenchy Fall 1997 Couture collection has only grown in popularity and significance. Designed by Alexander McQueen during the early seasons of his tenure as creative director, it merged influences from Spanish, Japanese, and Scottish cultures, creating an avant-garde medley titled “Eclect Dissect” that has become a celebrity favorite. In the past couple of years alone, stars such as Cynthia Erivo, Kaia Gerber, and Rosalía have turned to the line for award show, gala, and music video looks.

For the particular gown that Gaga would later wear, McQueen leaned heavily into the aforementioned Spanish influences. In an opera star-meets-bullfighter cross-over, the red-and-black silk gown and coordinating cropped jacket featured elements seen on stage and on traditional “traje de luces” uniforms. Black embroidery and lace detailing, decadent beading and tasseled epaulettes, and even a dramatic fan in hand, it made for a show-stopping moment—both back in the ’90s and this past week.

Gaga added a mesh veil over her face, blurring her bleached brows and pink lips. Her hair was in perfect waves, and she performed with dancers dressed in white, each holding red roses that matched the petals garnishing the carpet beneath them.
