Mike White lost Survivor—twice. But, once again, his hard-fought battle for survival will not be in vain. The television icon plans to channel his experience in the upcoming fourth season of “White Lotus.”
Once the runner-up for the show’s 37th season, White returned to the ludicrous survival game show for its 50th season, a move that seemed particularly insane given his recent success as the creator/writer/director of White Lotus. He didn’t last long this time—he was voted out in the fourth episode—but I guess deep down, we didn’t really expect him to win (and likely neither did he). Instead, White revealed that he needed to return to Fiji to free up his mind. “To be totally honest, one of the appeals of coming here is I need to stop thinking about The White Lotus,” he recently told Entertainment Weekly. Whether or now he was actually able to stop thinking about it is for him to know, but the break did end up helping his process; he polished off the scripts for season 4 in Fiji after being eliminated.
But that’s not all he left the island with. During last night’s season finale, longtime host Jeff Probst interviewed White (on a video call from France), where the multi-hyphenate creative revealed sine big news: the next season of White Lotus will feature appearances from co-contestants Charlie Davis and Kamilla Karthigesu.
This is not the first time White has roped in a co-contestant to cameo on his sardonic murder mystery series. In the first season of White Lotus, Alec Merlino appeared in five episodes as a bartender named Hutch. The next season, White tapped Kara Kay and Angelina Keeley to join them on the Italian coast (seen literally lounging on the beach). The third season then featured Natalie Cole, Carl Boudreaux, and Christian Hubicki. (This would lead us to believe season four should have four Survivor cameos.)
The two shows appear to be intrinsically linked in White’s mind. He’s said before that the gritty survival show partly inspired the interwoven stories in White Lotus. (When you think about it, the ruthless behavior of many of his characters mirrors that of conniving Survivor contestants, including White and his now-memefied wine drinking). And after finishing season 3, he felt he needed the same jumpstart that preceded the first season in 2021.
“I love it, but I also feel like it’s a fire hose into my mouth of feedback on the show coming up,” he said in his ET interview. “And I want the next season [of White Lotus] to be inspired. I want it to really be great and not just trying to fulfill another slot or something. And I think the only way it can be that is if I really get a reset.”
The new season of the show is currently filming in France, and it will center around guests staying at the famed Hôtel Martinez while attending the Cannes Film Festival. Lucky for White, that festival happens to be right now—and they’ve already been seen filming there earlier this week. This A-list cast puts previous iterations (all star-studded by their own right) to shame. The complete hotel register includes Steve Coogan, Caleb Jonte Edwards, Marissa Long, Chris Messina, Heather Graham, Frida Gustavsson, Rosie Perez, Tobias Santelmann, Ben Schnetzer, and Laura Smet, Vincent Cassel, Sandra Bernhard, Max Greenfield, Kumail Nanjiani, and, last but not least, the inimitable Laura Dern. Read that list again; it’s a lot to take in.
