Tom Selleck with no mustache

When Selleck booked his role as Jed Andrews on The Young and the Restless (1974-75) the actor was told he needed to shave the mustache in order to take on the part. Considering it hadn’t yet become his signature look, the actor didn’t mind having to ditch it.
“I just got used to it and used to have to shave it off for those early jobs,” he says. “And then it was kind of okay.”
Tom Selleck after ‘Magnum, P.I.’

Just after his 8 year run on Magnum, P.I. (1980-1988), Selleck was ready for a change. While he didn’t exactly get rid of his iconic mustache, which he had throughout the entirety of the series, he did grow it out into a beard. Even though he’s not technically clean shaven here, the beard is a very different look for him.
Tom Selleck in the ’90s

Throughout the 1990s, there were a handful of occasions when Tom Selleck appeared without his signature mustache—a look so associated with the actor that seeing him clean-shaven almost felt surprising. Whether for a role or simply a personal change, he occasionally stepped away from his trademark appearance. In the above photo, he sports light stubble, while the image below shows him completely clean-shaven.

“Most of the time I got hired, they said the mustache was okay, but [sometimes] you got to shave it off for the job, Selleck shared. “So I was born without it and prepared to work without it and I’ve done a ton of work without it.”
The actor almost shaved it for ‘Blue Bloods’

Although Selleck kept his mustache for his 14-year role on Blue Bloods (2010-2024), there was almost a world where Frank Reagan didn’t have one. The actor recalled his conversation with the show’s producer and CBS about potentially playing Frank with a clean face.
“At the time, they had him [Frank Reagan] as the New York City police chief,” Selleck shared, “and I said, ‘Well, I don’t think they can have mustaches, so I’ll shave off my mustache,.’ And [executive producer] Leonard [Goldberg] said, ‘Let me check with CBS.’ And they said no.”
