Tucked away in the hills of Malibu and down an ornate grass-and-stone walkway is a home so striking that it doesn’t just impress a Brooklyn-based style editor in town for the weekend. It’s also good enough for star KC Chiefs QB and three-time Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes.

“I was driving through the hills like, ‘Where are we going?’ and then we pull up to this beautiful house overlooking over the beach,” Mahomes says in a room situated near the patio and backyard, where music plays and guests mingle in celebration of watchmaker Hublot’s new Big Bang Summer collection. “It’s perfect.”

Mahomes is a recent addition to the official world of Hublot; he signed on as a brand ambassador last September. But, as he tells me over the course of our interview, he’s long been a fan, even purchasing—right there in the store, on the spot, no planning!—a watch from the Swiss luxury brand while on his honeymoon in St. Barts.

And he’s clearly taken to his new(ish) role with ease. On his wrist is a ceramic Big Bang in candy-store shades of pastel pink, green, and blue that practically screams summer. Complementing that is an easygoing overshirt-and-pants combo in quiet beige anchored by a pink T-shirt. The choice of tee was deliberate, Mahomes tells me, part of his current philosophy of tailoring his clothing to the watch he wants to wear on any given day.

To learn more about that—plus getting watch collecting advice from Travis Kelce, what a Patrick Mahomes x Hublot timepiece might look like, and, just for fun, the state of golf style—just keep reading.

ESQUIRE: So, tell me about the watch on your wrist.

PATRICK MAHOMES: It’s from the Hublot Big Bag summer collection. To me, it hit my eye immediately. It literally is summer. The colorway, the boldness of it. After that, it was all about finding something to wear with it. That’s how I do things nowadays: You pick the watch, and then the watch decides what you wear.

I like that attitude about putting a look together. How did you decide on that?

When I was a kid, I was really into shoes. It was that you’d pick shoes, and the shoes would help you decide the outfit. Now that I’ve gotten into watches, it’s like, “Let’s get the watch and figure out the outfit that goes with it.” This one right here has bold colors; it’s a bold watch. So the outfit has to match that. I felt like having the pink shirt on to go with the watch really brought it out.

A little pastel vibe.

Yeah, exactly. Obviously, with the event that we’re at, I feel like it fits perfectly.

I was reading about your watch collecting journey. I’m curious to hear where you started and how you think it’s evolved over the years.

It started in middle school and high school, seeing athletes and entertainers wearing watches. I was like, “One day, I want to be able to wear watches like that.” When I got to the NFL, it was about managing your money, but I remember my first watch I bought was after I got to the NFL—my first season. It was a memento of starting in the NFL. It was like that for the first two or three years, but then all of a sudden I was like, “I just want to start buying more watches.” So I’ve evolved into learning about the watches more and not just buying them for the way they look. Seeing what they mean, how they were designed, the history that goes into them. It’s been awesome working with Hublot and them teaching me that stuff as I go.

The coolest story to me is, before I worked with Hublot, I bought a Hublot watch in St. Barts on my honeymoon. I saw it and I was like, “Dude, I love this watch.” I figured, I’m on my honeymoon, I can have this. When we started working together, I told Hublot, and they explained that it was one of just 25. It worked out perfectly.

That chance to snag something limited edition without really knowing it feels so cool after the fact.

A hundred percent. And the fact that I just saw it and loved it in the store. There was a call to the financial advisor to make sure it was okay, but buying it on the spot, taking it home with me—it’s a watch that I cherish now for multiple reasons, with the honeymoon and then the relationship with Hublot now.

Do you have anyone you talk to about watch collecting? Any advisors?

Yeah. Not people that I would say are expert experts, but teammates that were older, like Alex [Smith] and Travis [Kelce]. Just them telling me about watches they had got, how they got them. And now, working with Hublot, they help explain the watches that I like. I wouldn’t say it’s one person, though. I always had my eye on watches, and now that I’ve learned more about them, my interest level and my love have grown.

What would you say is the piece of advice that’s stuck with you most from a teammate?

The whole thing with me was buying watches, like for my first season—Alex Smith had done it. But he bought watches that he was going to pass on to his kids. Having a reason or a significance for why you’re buying a watch, it means more to you. Like the St. Barts watch. Obviously, I bought some watches that I just like, but some of these watches, I buy them, like, “Alright, I’m gonna give this to my kid someday. I’m gonna give it to my son and he’s going to have a beautiful watch when he gets older.” Or, “I bought this because I was at this place, or when I signed my contract.” Having reasons gives more meaning to them than what’s on the face.

Does it change the way you think about a watch when you think you might pass something on one day?

A hundred percent. You want to give something that has meaning to it so when you pass it on—obviously your kids or whoever you give it to are going to love it—but you can tell the story of the watch, why you love it, why that watch means so much to you.

Were there pool floaties? Of course there were pool floaties.

If we were to see a Patrick Mahomes x Hublot watch, what would your aesthetic stamp on that be?

I want it to be something that’s bold, but I want it to be me. I don’t know what that is—colors, stuff like that—but I want it to be something that stands out for who I am. Being innovative, being bold, trying to press boundaries and push the envelope and get to the next and the best. Not being just with the status quo. I want that to be shown in the watch that I make. It’s something that’s me and stands out but at the same time it has history, and it has my love for football, it has a love for watchmaking and what it is. That’s something we’ve talked about, and it’s something where I want to spend time and do it the right way.

Can you conjure it in your mind?

As we’re talking, I’m thinking about stuff right now. But it’s such a monumental thing. Whenever you put your name on something with a brand like Hublot, you want it to be you. You want it to be your watch and show your personality and your love for life. So that’s something that I’ll be thinking about even more now that you’ve got me talking about it.

To make sure it’s really stamped in your brain: Do you want to create something that feels like a potential heirloom?

A hundred percent. At least something where, when you saw the watch, you would see me. You would see someone who’s creative, bold—someone who loves what they’re doing and loves life. That would definitely be something that I could give to my son and, one day, he would be able to wear with pride.

“Whenever you put your name on something with a brand like Hublot, you want it to be you. You want it to be your watch and show your personality and your love for life.”

Speaking of passing watches to others, you gave some of your teammates Big Bangs. What’s the kind of reaction you get from that kind of gift?

They were pumped, for sure. But you know what makes me the most proud? Seeing them wear it. We dress up and wear suits for away games and big trips, and you see these guys wearing the watch. And even more than them saying they’re proud of it, is when they do that, you know they’re proud of it. We didn’t do just all one color; we got different guys different watches. So I’m hoping that those watches fit them. From me knowing their personalities, these watches are something that they will love and be able to have for the rest of their lives.

And hopefully they can eventually pass them on to people in their lives.

And sometimes, guys like that, especially the younger guys, are like I was. They don’t have someone giving them advice about what to get, but they want something. So being able to give them something that I know is great and is going to have significance and be something they can pass on, I can be that liaison for them. I can teach them some things about the watch game.

Okay, so we’ve talked about the NFL and we’ve talked about watches. I’m going to pivot really hard to golf. I know you’re a golfer and the sport has had a major resurgence in style and fans and people coming to the sport. What do you think about golf style right now?

I love it. Working with Adidas, they have so many great things—these Adidas Originals and looser clothing. But more than anything, it’s bringing more people to golf. For years—I’ve played golf for a long time—it was just tucked-in shirts and long pants and belts. It pushed away some people who are great athletes and would love the game. Now, with the style changing, it’s evolved the entire golf landscape. They’re doing great, the PGA Tour, showcasing that now. And even though LIV isn’t doing great financially now, they pushed and got some more creativity to the game of golf. It’s helped out a ton of people. And I have friends, like my buddy Xavier Worthy, he’s a receiver and he’s started golfing and he’s getting good. Same thing with some of my other teammates. It’s not just this country club thing; everybody wants to be a part of it. Because they can show off their style and creativity now. So hopefully that continues. It’s going to be great for the game of golf long term.
