Here at Bazaar, we’ve been tracking many of the best bob trends for a while now, from the viral Riviera style to the transitional graduated version and more. Oscar-winner Penélope Cruz just gave us another soon-to-be-popular cut worth adding to our list of favorites. During this week’s press tour for her upcoming film The Invite in Los Angeles, the actress unveiled a new lived-in hair look that her stylist, Dimitris Giannetos, has dubbed the “Weekend Bob.”

“The Weekend Bob is all about hair that feels free and effortless—like you’re holding onto the luxury of the style you wore on Friday night, but with a more relaxed finish,” says Giannetos of the look. The stylist adds that the key to the bob’s playfulness is to enhance its texture without adding too many layers of product. The effortless style is meant to feel curated, yet relaxed, not blunt and precise.

“The ends have soft movement and subtle texture so the hair never feels too perfect,” he says. “The shape is versatile: it can be worn sleek, tucked behind the ears, or with natural bends and waves. The goal is movement and softness.”

To get the look at home, Giannetos recommends starting with a featherweight heat protectant and later a smooth blowout, then creating loose bends at the ends of your hair using a flat iron or large-barrel curling iron, like Tymo’s CurlPro Plus Automatic Rotating Curling Iron. “Don’t curl every section the same way; the texture should feel instead of uniform,” the expert tells Harper’s Bazaar.

Giannetos turned up the volume and dimension on Cruz’s bob with the addition of Great Lengths tape-in hair extensions. Next, once the curls cool completely, he says to gently break them apart with your fingers as opposed to brushing to help them maintain their shape. Lastly, to lock in the style’s textured yet touchable feel, the stylist advises finishing with the L’Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray for extra hold, and applying a lightweight finishing serum or shine spray on your ends.

Even if you don’t have wavy hair like Cruz, the beauty of the Weekend Bob is that it’s completely customizable and can be tailored for just about any texture or face shape. “It’s especially great for anyone who wants shorter hair without committing to a style that requires constant maintenance,” notes Giannetos.
