With more than 20,000 locations around the U.S., Dollar General is certainly one of the most popular dollar stores around. Many people also shop there to stock up on their favorite food and drink items, from pasta to soda. If you like to buy your coffee from the chain to make your own cup at home for less, you’ll want to check your pantry—the company is recalling instant coffee products due to foreign material contamination. Below you’ll find more information about the dollar store coffee recall, including where the items were sold and how to request a refund.

Why Dollar General recalled Clover Valley Instant Coffee

On August 11, 2025, Dollar General Corporation announced a recall of some of the coffee sold in its stores. This involves three lots of Clover Valley Instant Coffee, which is a private-label brand owned by the company. It produces many of the grocery and food items sold in the dollar store.

The reason the coffee is being pulled from shelves: A customer told store employees that glass fragments were found in a container they had purchased. Though no illness or injuries have been reported by anyone who has consumed the coffee, the recall is being done as a precaution since ingesting glass pieces is potentially dangerous. It can lead to serious issues like cuts to the mouth or throat, dental damage or holes pierced in the intestines.

At this time, the company has not been able to determine the source of the problem or why glass fragments ended up in the instant coffee.

How to identify the recalled coffee

All of the recalled products are under the same Clover Valley label, and each is an 8-oz. individual container. However, not all Instant Coffee is included in the notice. You’ll need to check the lot and expiration date information printed on the neck of the container to see if you have one at home.

Here is how to identify the recalled items:

  • Lot: L-5163 (With a “Best By” date of 12/13/2026)
  • Lot: L-5164 (With a “Best By” date of 12/13/2026)
  • Lot: L-5165 (With a “Best By” date of 12/14/2026)

The instant coffee containers in the recall also have a UPC number of 876941004069.
