When we’re heading to the beach, sand is our main concern. From the act of walking on it for the afternoon to the days afterwards where we’re trying to get it out of every crevice, every inch of cloth—sand is the main adversary. And sure, you can wear a running sneaker or a Chuck Taylor to the beach if it’s a last-minute thing. But, sneakers or (God forbid) socks in the sand should not be a first choice. You should always, always consider a proper pair of beach shoes first.
In the spirit of never beating a classic, we’re most often opting for a sandal or espadrille at the beach. Better yet: an espadrille sandal. If you’re looking for something more beach-adjacent, a leather sandal or boat shoe might better suit you.
Whether you’re posted up on the French Riviera or at your local state beach park, these are the best shoes to beach in.
There is a time and a place for a flip-flop; the beach is said time, said place. You can go for a classic rainbow, but lately we’re into what Vince has. The brand’s Fiji flip-flop uses a familiar foam base but swaps out a plasticky strap for a soft leather instead. An excellent upgrade.
For a non-flop sandal, we love these suede wrapped-toe things from Jacques Solovière. The soft suede straps prevent almost all blister-forming, sweat-induced discomfort that form whilst wearing a cheaper shoe. The padded insoles don’t hurt, either.
The past year of TikTok algorithms and menswear influencing has gone hard on the fisherman sandal. That might make you a bit fatigued on the style, but we think it’s got plenty of staying power. Vinny’s Fisherman sandal is the perfect option for it. It is well-made and looks great—something for wearing near beaches, in particular. It feels like a more substantial shoe than a flip-flop but without the bulk of any other shoe.
If you want a packable shoe you can get away with wearing at the beach, it’s a Sabah all the way. These take up almost no room in a bag, are comfortable to wear when it’s hot, and look good as dressed up or down as you like.
There is perhaps no go-to beach shoe like the espadrille, and no espadrille more classic than a Soludos. These are made with a jute footbed and canvas upper—understated and easy to clean. It is a very wise $85 spent.
If you’re willing to invest a little more in an espadrille, Morjas makes a damn good one. The sole is a little more substantial than most uber-flat espadrilles, and the suede upper is a solid upgrade.
Wear this Sebago boat shoe on a boat, out to dinner, or walking on the boardwalk after a beach day. It isn’t necessarily your on-the-sand shoe, but it is your near-the-sand shoe.
For one sandal that can do most things, we think G.H.Bass’s cross-strap is the one. that can. It has a supportive, secure footbed and cross-straps that keep your feet from slipping out.
Suede straps on an espadrille sole are the best of two beach shoe worlds, and we can’t believe it’s only now that these are coming into rotation. A no-brainer.
Another great espadrille take: a suede mule version. The suede upper is more elevated than canvas but the mule design feels casual. We love ‘em.
