John Galliano is the subject of the spring 2027 Costume Institute exhibition and will inform the coinciding Met Gala’s theme. A controversial choice, “John Galliano: Horizons” will honor the work of the influential designer through a series of garments, accessories, sketches, toiles, research books, and archival materials.

Galliano’s talent is rare. In the late ’90s and early 2000s, he revived the house of Dior and captured the attention of the fashion world with his elaborate, fantastical vision. But in 2011, he was captured on video making antisemitic comments and ultimately convicted of a hate crime in France. He has since dedicated himself to his redemption, and his provocative work at Margiela has proven to the world that his genius has yet to fade. Now, he’s being given what is perhaps the highest honor in fashion.

Galliano was a favorite from the get-go. He first became known in fashion in 1984 for his Central Saint Martins graduation collection “Les Incroyables,” which launched his eponymous line, sold to the British department store Browns. The collection entered fashion’s canon, establishing Galliano as someone who could reimagine highly traditional—18th-century, in this case—archetypal modes of dress through a highly romantic, even madcap lens. And he did this as many students do: with minute resources.

Givenchy Fall 1996 couture

After he spent a few years in limbo, the French couture house of Givenchy appointed him the successor to Hubert de Givenchy himself. Galliano lasted just over a year before he was tapped to helm the house of Christian Dior in 1996. Here, he established himself as a force in this industry, scaling his earlier ideas with the budget and reach of a major fashion brand. His couture shows were major spectacles in terms of both garments and production. And his visage, with that signature wire-thin mustache and the elaborate hats he so often wears, became almost as well known as his work.

In reviving Dior’s legacy, the new designer clashed high art and elaborate fantasy without losing his signature campy, rebellious energy. But it all came to an end in 2011, when a video was released of the designer making antisemitic comments.

Christian Dior Spring 1997 couture

After three years away from the industry, during which he met with Jewish leaders and underwent rehabilitation for alcohol and substance addiction, Galliano returned to helm Margiela in 2014. He continued to make beautiful, challenging clothing, bewitching the industry once more with collections like his widely celebrated Spring 2024 couture show. He left the house in 2024 and remained dormant until a partnership with Zara was announced earlier this year.

This is by no means the first exhibit given to a single designer. Past celebrants have included Alexander “Lee” McQueen, Karl Lagerfeld, Paul Poiret, Cristóbal Balenciaga, Gianni Versace, and more. It is, however, only the third to honor a living designer. The other two retrospectives examined the work of Yves Saint Laurent in 1983 and Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons in 2017.

It also raises complex questions about redemption. After his outburst, Galliano not only lost his post at Dior, but was convicted of a hate crime in a Paris court, after which he apologized for his actions. His clothes are undeniably incredible, and he still has an audience of reverential devotees and collectors. Pieces from his time at Dior can sell for upwards of 100,000 euros on the secondhand market. The exhibition and subsequent red carpet are sure to be spectacular—but the conversations around them will likely be heated.

Allegedly, Andrew Bolton, curator in charge of the Met’s Costume Institute, his team, and Galliano himself had a series of meetings with rabbis and Jewish leaders to determine their approach, and have said they will aim to tell the most accurate version of events. Whether this exhibition succeeds in its task is up to its viewers.
