At Women’s Health, we take testing sex toys seriously (and, yes, seriously fun). Over the last few years, 13 WH editors and contributors anonymously reviewed more than 60 of the buzziest vibrators across multiple categories, assessing everything from safety to overall sexual satisfaction. After trying various wand vibrators in different sexual scenarios—alone, partnered, in the shower—and comparing notes from multiple testers, we deemed the Magic Wand Rechargeable our “Best Wand Vibrator.”

In fact, one of our testers even said, “The Magic Wand is the only vibrator that lives full time in my nightstand.” Here’s why we think it deserves a spot in yours, too.

Why the Magic Wand Is Worth It

For starters, the Magic Wand is a trailblazer among sex toys. It’s credited with creating the entire category of wand vibrators, although that was a (happy!) accident. For those of you who missed Vibrator History 101, here’s the gist: In 1968, a Japanese company called Hitachi started selling a “neck and back massager,” which they called the Magic Wand because of its almost mystic ability to ease the kinks and knots in your muscles. Little did they know that it’d soon be used for a totally different kind of kink. It didn’t take long for famed sex educator Betty Dodson to turn the massager into one of the most renowned sex toys in existence. Dodson famously called the Magic Wand “the Cadillac of vibrators”—you know, because a Cadillac is so big and powerful.

Of course, that was nearly 50 years ago. Does the Magic Wand still live up to the hype? According to our testers, abso-frickin-lutely. “The Magic Wand remains the gold standard of wand vibes,” one reviewer said.

In fact, it’s precisely because the Magic Wand started as a back massager that this sex toy has stood the test of time. It was designed to send vibrations deep into your muscle tissue, which means that it can also send vibrations deep into the muscle tissue of your clitoris.

That matters because the clit isn’t just that little nub packed with 15,000 (!) nerve endings. While those nerve endings are undoubtedly important for orgasm, the clit also has internal “legs.” They basically look like a wishbone that travel along the pelvic bone, sexuality educator Jane Fleishman, PhD, previously told Women’s Health. “They’re also made of spongy tissue that can get erect when aroused,” she said. Many smaller sex toys, like bullet vibrators, deliver buzzy sensations only to the clit’s nerve endings, but the Magic Wand provides deep, rumbly sensations to the external clit’s nerve endings and the spongy tissue of its internal structure, which can help you have a deeper, longer, and more intense orgasm.

Need we say more? Well, just in case you’re still not sold, here’s exactly how our testers used the Magic Wand for extra-O-rdinary results:

How Our Testers Used The Magic Wand

For our reviewers, the highlight of trying this vibrator was its pure power. “The strength of this vibrator is its strong suit—so much so that I never need the highest level. Even on the second setting, I can use this vibe through my jeans and still get the job done,” one tester said. The other agreed: “I can see why the Magic Wand is a classic—it’s a real work horse of a vibrator.”

And—good news for long-time Magic Wand devotees—the rechargeable version is just as powerful as the original plug-in option. “I’d feared the rechargeable [wand] wouldn’t be as strong as the corded version, but it packs just as big a punch,” one reviewer said. Plus, this vibrator runs for up to three hours on a full battery charge. But if you ever find yourself in a pinch, “you can even use the Magic Wand Rechargeable while it’s plugged in,” our tester confirmed.

The Magic Wand’s ‘streamlined’ controls are easy to use and adjust.

Both testers said the buttons were a functionality highlight because they made a larger-sized toy more approachable and accessible for anyone new to wand vibrators. “The controls are streamlined and easy to find without looking,” one reviewer said, while the other tester added, “The wand is very intuitive to turn on and off.”

That said, the second reviewer noted that it wasn’t super easy to decrease the vibration speed/intensity because they had to cycle through all of the settings and start back at the beginning. While that was a frustrating part of the testing process, the reviewer did add that the Magic Wand only features four vibration settings. So, it is easier to cycle through those options compared to many vibrators with similar buttons that require users to cycle through 10-plus patterns and vibration levels before getting back to the baseline level.

As shown above, smaller versions of the Magic Wand Rechargeable, the Magic Wand Mini ($100) and Magic Wand Micro ($90, perfect for travel), also feature similarly simple controls.

Both reviewers liked the limited number of vibration settings.

Sometimes, the best things in life are also the simplest, and that holds true for the Magic Wand. Both reviewers said they enjoyed the vibrator’s four intensity options. “I’m not usually a fan of patterns (I prefer a consistent vibe), but the second setting really did it for me,” one reviewer said. The other tester added that, in fact, the lack of additional vibration settings was one of their favorite features. “Personally, I don’t like tons of options—I find it hard to switch through all of them—so this wasn’t a ‘con’ for me,” they said. “But it might not be up everyone’s alley for that reason.”

The Magic Wand has three buttons to turn the vibrator on/off, increase vibration intensity, and cycle through different patterns. The toy also lights up blue to show an increase in intensity levels and green to correspond with each pattern change.

The long handle and large head made this toy a welcome addition to partnered sex.

Only one of the testers used the Magic Wand with a partner, but both said they enjoyed holding the handle of this toy, due to its shape. “I like that the handle tapers—it felt nicer in my hand than some bulkier vibes,” one reviewer said.

The other tester even said the design of the Magic Wand’s handle and head made it a fun and sexy addition to date night. “The long handle makes it easy to position between bodies during partnered sex, and the large head makes it easy for another person to aim without worrying about getting to the exact right spot,” they explained.

Bottom Line: Is the Magic Wand Worth Buying?

“Absolutely,” one tester said. “No matter how many other toys I try, nothing can replace it.” Overall, both reviewers enjoyed using the Magic Wand, although they did each note some downsides as well.

Because this vibrator is so powerful, both testers said it’s on the louder end of the sex toy spectrum, so it might not be the best choice if you live with roommates or kids, and/or want a toy you can use silently and discreetly.

The Magic Wand Rechargeable also isn’t waterproof—a con for one of the reviewers. But don’t worry, Magic Wand Wielders, because the Magic Wand Waterproof ($160) is ideal for a sexy splish splash. In fact, a WH editor who tested that toy said: “The Magic Wand is known for being one of the most powerful vibrators on the market, and the waterproof version lives up to the hype… On land, underwater, near, far, wherever you are, you don’t know and you don’t care because you’re too busy having the best orgasm of your life.”
