Why the Brooks Ghost Max 3 Silenced Every Running Doubt After 6 Months of Hardcore Testing—Here’s What Happened Next

Ever find yourself torn between craving that cloud-like cushion in your sneakers and feeling like you’re teetering on a bouncy air mattress? Yeah, me too. I totally get the allure of super-padded kicks when I’m clocking serious miles on my feet—but some of those massive marshmallowy shoes? They can feel downright precarious, turning a simple stroll into a balancing act. That’s why the Brooks Ghost Max 3 caught my eye—it promises all the softness without sending me wobbling around. Imagine a sneaker that cradles your feet, keeps your ankles steady, and actually helps you roll through your stride instead of sinking into the sole. Intrigued? I was too from the moment I slipped these on. Dive in as I unpack how this shoe isn’t just another fluffy promise but a legit game changer for long walks, easy runs, and everyday hustle.

I have a complicated relationship with super-cushioned sneakers. In theory, I want as much of that pillow-y sensation as possible, especially when I’m walking for hours or spending a lot of time on my feet. In practice, some of those giant, marshmallowy shoes can make me feel like I’m balancing on an air mattress. The Brooks Ghost Max 3 is different. It has a ton of cushion, but I never feel like I’m sinking into it or about to roll an ankle.

I notice the support almost immediately when I put it on: my feet feel nicely contained, my ankles feel steady, and there’s none of that slightly wobbly sensation I sometimes get from a really plush sneaker. It’s especially nice on long walks, when I’m several miles in and a less supportive shoe would usually start to make itself known by making my arches cramp or my heel pain flare up.

Something about me is that I usually don’t love a rocker sole, unless it’s very subtle—like in this shoe. There’s a small but noticeable curve through the bottom of the shoe (kind of like a rocking chair) that helps roll my foot forward as I walk, so my stride feels almost like it has a little momentum built in. I wouldn’t say it feels completely effortless—you still have to do the walking—but there’s definitely less of that heavy, flat-footed feeling I get from some max-cushion sneakers. Some shoes with a rocker bottom make me feel a bit unstable, especially while running or making tight turns, but I have no fear of falling when I wear this shoe whether I’m walking my dog, incline walking on the treadmill, or running miles outdoors.

The broad base gives me a really solid platform, while Brooks’ GuardRails tech (which uses firm foam on either side of the heel to keep feet locked in) helps keep my foot feeling centered. The foam is infused with nitrogen, making it super comfortable and lightweight without being overly plush. That’s what earned this shoe the “most supportive” spot in our guide to the best Brooks walking shoes. I can wear it when I know I’ll be on my feet for hours without constantly thinking about how my feet are landing. I’ve worn it for long days of travel, sightseeing, and errands, and it’s a shoe I’m happy to slip on when I know I’m going to rack up a ridiculous step count. Bonus: It works for more than just walking. I’ve worn it for easy runs around my suburban neighborhood, city commutes, treadmill walks, and everyday.

One thing I’d keep in mind is that the upper showed some wear and tear earlier than I expected after a few months of regular use. It’s not something that would stop me from recommending the shoe, especially considering how good it makes my feet feel, but it’s worth mentioning if you’re hard on your sneakers.

The Ghost Max 3 is the shoe for you if cushion and comfort alone aren’t enough and you need to feel supported, too. It has that max-cushion feel, but the broad base, rocker sole, and GuardRails tech keep my feet feeling locked-in. After a long day of walking, that combination is pretty hard to beat
