When a Guy Casually Walks into the Supreme Court with a Guillotine and Walks Out Free—Here’s What They Don’t Want You to Know!
Ever get the feeling we’re all living in a real-life Mel Brooks sketch, but with a twist of cosmic weirdness? Because honestly, when a guy pulls up to the Supreme Court with a freaking guillotine strapped to his pickup truck, you’ve got to wonder—are the scripts for reality just running out of fresh ideas? Philan Tam Duy Le, a 35-year-old from California, decided to live out of his truck for a few weeks, but he didn’t just pack protein shakes and dumbbells—oh no—he brought along a 10-foot-tall wooden guillotine. Now, here’s where it gets nuts: federal prosecutors wanted to keep him locked up, citing danger and no roots in D.C., but the judge saw things differently. No threats, no criminal record, just a man and his odd road trip companion. So, while the courtroom drama unfolded, my main thought was less about court dates and more about—did anyone actually take the guillotine away? Because that’s the real cliffhanger here. Dive into how this bizarre saga played out, and whether our justice system can handle the truly outlandish—or if some tales are just too strange to hold down. LEARN MORE
I have accepted fully that we are all living through an artificial timeline created by some superior beings who combine the wisdom of the spheres with the imagination of Mel Brooks. But, sometimes, damn, man, I just don’t know. From The Washington Post:
Federal prosecutors on Wednesday unsuccessfully argued that a man police say transported a guillotine in the back of his truck and parked it alongside the Supreme Court building should be kept in the D.C. jail.
The U.S. Capitol Police arrested 35-year-old Philan Tam Duy Le, of Julian, California, on Tuesday and initially charged him with carrying a dangerous weapon.
On Wednesday afternoon, prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia instead brought a misdemeanor charge of attempted possession of a prohibited weapon.
They asked Judge Robert Hildum to hold Le in the D.C. jail, saying Le is from California but “has no roots” and has been driving around the country for three weeks living out of his vehicle.
Living out of his vehicle with a freaking guillotine in said vehicle.
Defense attorney Charles Murdter, who was representing Le at the arraignment, standing in for his defense attorney Anthony Smith, argued against keeping Le incarcerated. Murdter said living out of his car was no justification. “I was on a seven-week road trip recently myself,” he said.
The judge declined to grant the prosecutors’ request to hold him, citing Le’s lack of criminal history and his cooperation with police so far.
“He didn’t even threaten anyone,” Hildum said during the hearing in arraignment court.
While possessing the guillotine is a “very, very serious thing,” Hildum said, it was “pure speculation” that Le would not show for his next court hearing.
All due respect to His Honor, but my biggest concern wouldn’t be whether or not this gentleman will turn up for his next court appearance. My biggest concern is whether or not they gave him his freaking guillotine back.
And, by the way, we can chalk up another L for U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro’s crack prosecutors. They couldn’t get remand on a guy arrested outside the Supreme Court with a freaking guillotine.
When the officers arrived, Le was perched on the wooden platform of the 10-foot-tall guillotine in the bed of his black Toyota Tacoma pickup, according to the arrest report. It was parked in a spot for permit holders only in a Library of Congress parking lot, the report said.
Nothing to see here. Move along.
