More than 800 industry leaders attended the Ibec President’s Dinner at the RDS on Thursday evening.

Maureen Walsh, managing director of DeCare, was formally welcomed to the role of Ibec president for 2026-27 after it was announced earlier in the day that she would succeed Colin Hunt, CEO of AIB.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin delivered a keynote address at the event, which celebrates the handover of the Ibec presidency and is considered to be the group’s most prestigious networking event.

Walsh successfully led DeCare Dental Insurance Ireland from start-up stages to become Ireland’s first and only specialist dental and vision benefits insurer, serving over 79,000 members and 620 client companies.

She previously served as a member of the governing body of GMIT (now Atlantic Technological University), serves on the Local Enterprise Evaluations and Appeals Committee, and is a former chairperson of the Mayo Cancer Support Association.

Walsh holds a Bachelor of Science from Boston College, an MBA from the National University of Ireland, Galway, and is a Certified Insurance Practitioner.

Addressing the gathered crowd, Walsh spoke of the influence her late father had on her career, “he taught me the value of “graft with a capital G” – the crunch and grind required
to build something lasting.”

He was the one who convinced her to make to move to Ireland, and “when I packed my bags and relocated from my marketing role in Boston in September 1999, I thought I was moving to the West of Ireland for two years.

“More than twenty-five years later, I can tell you firsthand: the high-performing talent based outside our major cities is not a short-term fix, it is our true competitive advantage.”

Walsh spoke of the challenges and opportunities AI brings to the business world, and spoke of her intentions as President of Ibec.

“As your President, my focus will be on three core policy themes: equipping our workforce for the AI era, creating a fairer ecosystem for entrepreneurs, and finally delivering on balanced regional development,” she said.

“Speaking as a business leader in the West and having had the pleasure of serving two terms as Ibec West Regional President, I see daily that the resourcefulness of our workforce remains our true competitive edge,” she added.

“But to safeguard existing enterprise and convince the next generation of foreign direct investment to choose our regions over competing global markets, that human potential must be backed by high-capacity utility and connectivity networks – because ambition for our regions without world-class infrastructure is just noise.”

“To protect national resilience, capital spending must be prioritised above all other fiscal demands.”

She spoke of the need for ‘Generational Solutions’ and promised An Taoiseach that “Ibec and the leaders in this room will be at the forefront.

“We will work in partnership with your government, deploying our capital, driving innovation, and providing the collective leadership required to navigate this transition.”
