John Mulaney wasn’t nominated for anything at the Emmys this year, but he won the whole night. At the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, the comedian presented Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. It turned out to be an A-plus prompt, as Mulaney riffed on the underrepresentation of MEN on television and why it’s important to go down on a woman. Like a man.

“Since the creation of television, men have been historically underrepresented,” began Mulaney, drawing immediate laughs. “For the first three years TV existed, there were no men on it. It was just beauty contests and children talking to hand puppets. Until the early sixties, until a man walked out and said, ‘ENOUGH! My name is Fonzie and the President’s been shot!’ But let’s talk about these bros tonight. These sweat hogs.”

Mulaney then took a jab at “serious” acting (he was presenting for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, remember).

“Some of the men in this category do method acting, and some do regular, less annoying acting. But no matter what, when these fellas hit their mark, they know all their lines. Why? Because they started looking at their sides earlier that morning. These men—’scuse me, these men—give it all in every single take. Unless the coverage is on another actor, in which case they might bounce early. But that’s okay.”

He kept going. “And they can play anything, these nominees. Not just doctors. They can play a cop, or an FBI agent, or a Secret Agent, and that’s it. No other examples.”

And then, the pièce de résistance that led to Mulaney’s mic getting cut for a few seconds: “I believe it was DJ Khaled who said real men don’t go—… but, these nominees know that that is B.S.! They know there’s often less pressure on them if they do that first.”

In case you’re lost: DJ Khaled, the DJ and rapper best known for shouting “DJ KHALED!” in some random Top 40 songs, infamously said in 2018 that he doesn’t perform oral sex on his wife. Now, at the Emmys, Mulaney called him out eight years later.

Lest you think getting censored was all Mulaney had, he had one more trick up his sleeve. He pulled out a copy of Frank Vincent’s 2006 book A Guy’s Guide to Being a Man’s Man (rented from the Glendale Public Library) and read aloud a passage in which Vincent called any man who doesn’t treat everyone around him with respect and class a “jabroni in a good suit.” That became a segue into awarding Noah Wyle for his work on The Pitt.
