As co-host of NBC’s Today with Jenna & Sheinelle, Jenna Bush Hager’s mornings are full, and now, she’s taking on primetime as an executive producer of Line of Fire—a family drama and suspense thriller starring Peter Krause, Hope Davis and Charlie Barnett set to premiere on September 21, 2026 on NBC.

Here, during an NBC backlot event, Bush Hager gets candid about how her White House roots help inform this series about a dysfunctional family of federal law-enforcement officers who get pulled into a deadly conspiracy.

Plus, the New York Times bestselling author and founder of Read with Jenna reveals how playdates with her twin sister, Barbara Pierce Bush, led to her to this collaboration with Gossip Girl and Quantico alum turned Line of Fire creator, Joshua Safran.

On bringing White House experience to ‘Line of Fire’

Having been part of the Today family since 2009, Jenna Bush Hager hopes her morning show viewers will follow her to primetime to watch her new show, Line of Fire.

“We’ve seen Carson Daly do it with The Voice,” Jenna says. “We know it works.”

That said, Line of Fire’s executive producer maintains the real draw of her new series isn’t her day job: It’s the drama she’s helping showrunner Joshua Safran create onscreen.

The action centers on the Hollingsworths, a family that works across several branches of federal law enforcement, including the Secret Service, U.S. Marshals, FBI and Department of Justice. As their professional worlds collide and they become the target of a mysterious assassin, the series explores the balance between honoring sworn oaths to protect others and fulfilling their responsibility to each other.

“This is about family, and I knew these people—I had secret servicemen who would leave their family to protect mine,” says Hagar, whose father and grandfather served as President of the United States. “The dynamics of that are very much part of the DNA of what Josh has written, which I think is brilliant.”

From kiddie parties to primetime collaboration

With family at the heart of the drama, Hager reveals she first teamed up with Safran over the screams and laughter of children at play.

“He lived across the street from my sister and their kids had playdates,” she sets up. “So I hung out with him at my sister’s kids’ second birthday, and we talked about this dynamic of this family of people that are putting other people first in many circumstances and therefore, what happens in their own family is complicated.

“And I thought, ‘That’s something that I witnessed!’” she adds with a laugh.

Grounding the ‘Line of Fire’ in her White House experience

Due to her deep respect for those who’ve protected her and her family, Hager was determined to find a thread of realism in this world of make-believe.

“One of the things that we did was bring on a former Secret Service man that I admire and adore as a consultant to work with Josh and the writers so that there’s real authenticity to it,” she says. “Because we’ve all seen the shows about our industries, where we’re like, ‘Wait…’

“I mean, I love The Morning Show… but they would never have a party in the studio because of the union laws, you know?” she cracks. “Of course, Josh was like, ‘Listen, some of it has to be made for TV.’ But we’ll also have some real truth to it, and that was important to all of us.”

‘Line of Fire’ has ‘This is Us’ energy

With a heroic yet messy family at its center, Hagar maintains Line of Fire fills a hole left by the drama This Is Us, not to mention Krause’s early Emmy-winning HBO hit.

“Before Pete was even cast, when somebody asked me about the show, I said it reminded me of Six Feet Under—not in all the ways, but in the way that it really is about a family and how their business affects their dynamics,” she explains.

“And it can be very funny,” she adds of the high-stakes drama. “These characters have this fast‑talking, almost like a dance that I don’t feel like we’ve seen on network TV in a while. I’m just so proud to be part of it.”

Line of Fire stars Hope Davis and Parenthood and 911 alum Peter Krause as U.S. Marshal Jane Hollingsworth and Agent Mike Hollingsworth, as well as Kat Cunning, Tommy O’Brien and Taylor Bloom as their adult children—an FBI agent, a Secret Service agent and a Department of Justice employee. Chicago Fire alum Charlie Barnett is also part of the cast.

In the Line premieres Monday, September 21, 2026, at 10 p.m. ET/PT (10/9c) on NBC, with replay available on Peacock the next day.
