It may look gold, but make no mistake, the new limited-edition Citizen is made of sturdier stuff.

Rather than mere gold plating, the Japanese brand has opted for a hardened, gold-tone finish. But that’s not all. It also packs a J800 Eco-Drive movement and a day-date display into its 39.5mm case.

There’s even more good news: the Zenshin three-hand AW0132-55P costs just a scant (in the watch world) $695. That means you get all that utility and all those good looks for far less than one might expect.

The warm, light-gold finish is the result of Citizen’s Duratect Amber Yellow treatment, which was introduced to its Super Titanium range in 2025. Rather than simply coating the watch in gold, Citizen uses a nickel-free niobium-titanium alloy for the surface, which is hardened to between 1,700 and 2,300 Vickers. According to Citizen, that makes it between ten and 20 times harder than conventional gold plating. It is also hypoallergenic, so this is one gold-looking watch that doesn’t need to be treated particularly delicately.

At 39.5mm, the case is a pretty easy size to wear, while the Super Titanium construction keeps the weight down. The material is around 40 percent lighter than stainless steel, while being significantly harder at the surface. Citizen pairs it with a matching integrated bracelet and a textured yellow dial, giving the whole thing a distinctly monochromatic look without actually being made from gold.

Inside is Citizen’s J800 Eco-Drive movement, which means there is no battery-changing ritual to worry about. It charges from light and, according to Citizen, can run for around eight months when fully charged. The day-date display sits at three o’clock, while the sapphire crystal, 100m water resistance, and screw-down case back make this more than just a watch for looking good at dinner.

It is, in other words, a gold-looking titanium watch that is lighter, tougher and considerably less precious than it appears. And at $695, it is a fairly compelling way to get the look without having to shell out for the privilege.
