If you’re a student looking for a no-annual-fee cash-back card that can help you build credit, the Discover it® Student Chrome is a straightforward option.

Discover it Student Chrome: The basics

The Discover it Student Chrome is a no-annual-fee cash-back card for students who want to earn rewards while building credit. You’ll earn 2% cash back at gas stations and restaurants on up to $1,000 in combined purchases each quarter, automatically. All other purchases earn 1% cash back.

The card’s biggest draw is its first-year cash-back match. Discover will automatically match all the cash back you’ve earned during your first year, with no limit on the amount it will match.

While the benefits are limited, I appreciate how the card can help newer credit card users. Discover says you don’t need a credit score to apply, and responsible use of the card can help build credit because Discover reports your payment history to all three major credit bureaus.

Through 2027, Capital One is merging all of Discover’s card products into its system. If you’re a current cardholder, your account should transition at some point over the next year. New cardholders will immediately be put on Capital One’s network. Certain perks covered in this review may be unavailable for current cardholders until their account is migrated to Capital One.

Keep an eye out for an email about your account migration.

Discover it Student Chrome benefits

The Discover it Student Chrome offers a relatively simple set of benefits geared toward students who are new to managing credit.

Discover provides cardmembers with a free FICO Score, and checking your score doesn’t hurt your credit. The issuer also provides tools that can help you monitor your spending and manage your account.

If you misplace your card, you can quickly freeze your account through Discover’s website or mobile app to prevent new purchases and cash advances. The card also includes $0 fraud liability for unauthorized purchases.

Other useful features include free Social Security number alerts, account alerts, a recurring-charges dashboard, a spend analyzer and digital wallet support.

New cardholders are automatically placed on Capital One’s network, while existing cardholders will gain access as their accounts are migrated.

Once your account is on Capital One’s network, you’ll also receive access to Capital One Offers, which can provide up to 15% cash back on eligible purchases with select merchants.

These aren’t benefits that will make the Student Chrome stand out among rewards cards, but they can be useful for students who are learning how to manage a credit card and monitor their credit.

You also don’t have to give up the Student Chrome once you graduate. According to Discover, your account’s terms, conditions, rewards and features remain the same after graduation, so you can continue using the card even when you’re no longer a student. Keeping the account open may also be beneficial if it’s one of your oldest credit accounts, since the age of your accounts is one factor that affects your credit score.

How to earn and use your rewards

The Discover it Student Chrome’s earning structure is simple, which can be particularly helpful if you’re new to credit card rewards.

Earning cash back

With the Discover it Student Chrome, you’ll earn:

  • 5% cash back per dollar spent on Capital One Entertainment*
  • 5% back per dollar spent on hotels, rental cars and activities booked through Capital One Travel*
  • 2% back on purchases at gas stations and restaurants (up to $1,000 in combined purchases each quarter, then 1% back)
  • 1% back on all other purchases

*These earning rates are only available once your account is on Capital One’s network.

The 2% rate applies automatically, so there’s no need to remember to activate quarterly bonus categories. Purchases in those categories after you hit the $1,000 quarterly cap earn 1% cash back.

For a student who regularly spends on gas and dining, that’s a useful perk. While the quarterly cap limits how much you can earn at the elevated rate, most students likely won’t find the cap particularly restrictive. If you spend the full $1,000 each quarter in those categories, you’d earn $20 in cash back each quarter before factoring in the first-year Cashback Match.

The card’s first-year match can make those earnings considerably more valuable during your first year. After the match ends, though, the Student Chrome’s 1% base earning rate isn’t especially competitive.

Redeeming cash back

There are several ways to redeem the cash back earned with the Discover it Student Chrome.

You can redeem cash back for a statement credit or an electronic deposit. You can also use rewards with select merchants, purchase gift cards or make a charitable donation.

Your cash back doesn’t expire while your account remains open.

There is no minimum redemption amount, so you don’t have to wait to accumulate a certain amount of cash back before using your rewards.

I appreciate that the redemption system is straightforward for students who may prefer simple, flexible cash-back rewards over a more complicated points system.

Where the Discover it Student Chrome falls short

The biggest drawback of the Discover it Student Chrome is that the card’s benefits are relatively limited once the first-year Cashback Match ends.

The 2% rate at gas stations and restaurants is useful, but it’s capped at $1,000 in combined purchases each quarter.

While cardholders on Capital One’s network can also earn elevated rates through Capital One Travel and Capital One Entertainment, most everyday purchases outside the card’s bonus categories earn just 1% cash back. Depending on your spending habits, you may earn more with a different card.

The card’s cash-back rewards may also feel limiting if you eventually want to use your rewards for travel. Unlike cards that earn transferable points or miles, the Student Chrome doesn’t give you access to airline or hotel transfer partners, which can potentially provide more value from your rewards.

The Student Chrome’s first-year Cashback Match makes it particularly attractive as a starter card. But after the first year, its earning rates become less compelling, especially as your credit history improves and you become eligible for a broader range of rewards cards.

Is the Discover it Student Chrome worth it?

The Discover it Student Chrome is worth considering if you’re a student looking for a straightforward way to earn cash back while building credit. There’s no annual fee, the 2% categories require no activation and the first-year Cashback Match can significantly boost your rewards.

For long-term everyday spending, though, you may eventually find better options as your credit profile develops. The Student Chrome makes the most sense as a simple starter card rather than a card you’ll necessarily want to keep as your primary rewards card indefinitely.

When to apply for the Discover it Student Chrome

The best time to consider the Discover it Student Chrome is when you can take advantage of its first-year Cashback Match.

There’s no limit to how much you can earn with the cash-back match at the end of your first year, which means your earnings are effectively doubled for 12 months.

This can be a solid offer if you plan to use the card frequently in your first year.

Keep in mind that you’ll need to meet the card’s eligibility requirements. You must be enrolled at least part-time at a college or university and have sufficient income or savings to make your monthly payments.

If you meet those requirements and are looking for your first credit card, applying while you’re still a student can give you an opportunity to build your credit history while earning cash-back rewards.

Bottom line

The Discover it Student Chrome is a solid starter card for students who want to earn cash back without paying an annual fee. The automatic 2% rate on gas and dining is easy to understand (subject to a quarterly spending cap), while the first-year Cashback Match can make the card particularly rewarding during its first year.

I think the card is a strong starter option for students who value simplicity and don’t want to keep track of rotating bonus categories.

Its long-term earning potential is more limited, but for students who are focused on building credit and want a straightforward rewards structure, the Student Chrome is a worthwhile option.
