The completion of €46m National Broadband Plan works in Co Leitrim could attract over 1,300 remote workers to the county, according to the country’s new economic development and skills strategy.

The Shaping Leitrim 2026-2036 plan from Leitrim County Council and Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim Education and Training Board (MSLETB).

The ten-year strategy is built around eight pillars and 30 practical actions designed to strengthen Leitrim’s economy, workforce and communities over the next decade.

According to the report, 28% of Leitrim’s workforce currently works remotely compared with a national average of 35.9%.

If the county were to close that gap, it could result in approximately 1,300 additional remote workers living and working in Leitrim.

Within the Carrick-on-Shannon labour catchment area, more than 62% of resident workers hold third-level qualifications, yet over 70% currently travel outside the area for employment.

The report states that improved digital connectivity through the NBP gives Leitrim an unprecedented opportunity to retain skilled workers, attract returning emigrants and remote professionals and generate greater economic activity in towns and villages throughout the county.

“Matching the national remote-working rate alone could bring another 1,300 remote workers into Leitrim’s resident workforce,” said Joseph Gilhooly, chief executive of Leitrim County Council.

“We now have the digital infrastructure to support that ambition. The challenge is to translate connectivity into jobs, investment, business growth and vibrant communities.

“The Leitrim Ambassadors Summit is about bringing together people with a strong connection to this county, along with leaders from business, enterprise and public life, to help us identify new opportunities and build a shared vision for Leitrim’s future.

“As seen through our recently launched Most Definitely Leitrim initiative, we want to strengthen our profile as a place where people can live exceptionally well, build successful careers and create sustainable businesses.”

Leitrim’s population has already grown by almost 10% since 2018, making it one of the fastest-growing counties in the state.

The report suggests that the combination of broadband infrastructure, a highly educated workforce, competitive business costs and a quality of life places the county in a strong position to attract further investment and population growth.

“For generations, geography could limit the jobs people could take and the markets local businesses could reach. High-speed broadband changes that equation,” said Cllr Mary Bohan, An Cathaoirleach of Leitrim County Council.

“People can now live in Leitrim and work anywhere. This is essential infrastructure that can help us attract investment, retain young people and create opportunities for future generations.”
