Is the Saatva Classic Mattress Really Worth Your Hard-Earned Cash? Our Shocking Findings After Years of Hardcore Testing!
Ever wondered why some mattresses feel like a cloud wrapped in a firm handshake, while others barely hold up past a good afternoon nap? When it comes to mattresses, most brands scream convenience with mattress-in-a-box gimmicks, but none quite deliver the heft and sturdy luxury like Saatva does. It’s not just about sleeping—it’s about investing in a throne of comfort that demands actual human couriers to carefully set it up, thanks to its heavyweight combo of dual-layer coils, memory foam, and a cushy cotton topper. Trust me, after years in the game, I’ve seen plenty of mattresses come and go, but the Saatva Classic? That bad boy has a permanent spot in many editors’ bedrooms—and it’s not leaving anytime soon. So, if you’re tired of compromising between support and softness, buckle up. Here’s the deep dive into why the Saatva Classic might just be the smartest sleep upgrade you never knew you needed. WHEN IT COMES to the world of mattresses, Saatva remains supreme. The reason: While there are plenty of online mattress-in-a-box brands available, Saatva’s premium sturdiness at a reasonable price point has always been why the company has stood out to us.
You won’t find that with many of the Saatva’s competitors, because you can’t pack that sort of heft into a box. Saatva mattresses need to be delivered and set up by a pair of couriers because they’re composed of two layers of coils, memory foam, and a cushy cotton topper, with a ring of reinforced foam around the perimeter to keep the sides rigid.
The one that has found a permanent place in many a home of Men’s Health editors is the Saatva Classic. The flagship mattress is a hybrid that comes in three firmness levels and marries the best of spring and memory foam mattresses. Some of our editors have been sleeping on the Saatva Classic for years, and don’t envision a different mattress for them.
After years of testing this mattress, we’ve compiled all our editors’ testing notes and opinions on the Classic into one mega review of what we think is the best mattress for just about anyone.
What We Love About the Saatva Mattress
Can Dial-In Your Height and Firmness
One of our favorite things about Saatva is its personalization, which can really accommodate just about any sleeper. Part of that is because the brand’s mattresses are all made-to-order, and assembled and crafted in the U.S. When it comes to height, there are 11.5-inch and 14.5-inch mattress heights to choose from, and it’s important to include your foundation, frame, and height to make sure your setup isn’t too tall for you. Our editors have tried both and found each admirable, though the 14.5-inch just provides more height and stability. If you’re on a smaller size like a full or twin, it’s worth upgrading to the 14.5-inch because the edging might give in a little more.
In terms of firmness, you can find plush soft, luxury firm, and firm. When we tried the plush soft, it didn’t have a sinking feel. We actually felt supported by the additional padding that conforms to the body. It’s ideal for side sleepers who need a mattress that cradles their body in this position. However, the luxury firm is Saatva’s best-seller (and what a few MH editors have), as it mimics a high-end hotel mattress that has a balance between strong support and cushiony comfort.
As one editor who has been testing a king-size luxury firm Classic says, “This mattress is the best I’ve ever tried. I find it maintains its shape extremely well, which is my main concern—I’m never pulled down into my wife’s side and she is not pulled down into mine. It stays evenly flat and supportive.”
Excellent Custom Service
In our various experiences with Saatva over the years, we haven’t had an issue with delivery or customer service. “The mattress was delivered on time, and the delivery team was professional and well-presented,” said one editor.
The 365-night sleep trial is no joke either, as one editor swapped her size and then height out (separate times) until the third one was the charm: “I had a queen and felt we needed more room, then had a great customer service experience where we didn’t like the first king 11.5-inch mattress and upgraded to the 14.5-inch. Saatva was easy to work with, brought the new one out and took away the other seamlessly.”
Toss in the lifetime warranty, and it’s easy to see that if you ever have an issue, Saatva is going to make sure you’re happy. Do keep in mind that if you want a full refund, there is a $99 processing fee but no charge for exchanges.
Saatva Has Awesome Sales
When it comes to Saatva, it’s always a great time to buy a mattress. While you may get extra discounts during Black Friday and other holidays, Saatva constantly has huge sales and promotions going on so don’t expect to ever pay full price. (Case in point, the brand’s early Labor Day Sale knocks $325 off a queen and ends August 21.) This makes the $2,139 starting price for a queen a little more attractive. We are always on the lookout for the best times to buy, and can genuinely say there is a minimum 10 percent off sale nearly every month of the year.
Watch Out for
The downside of having a big, sturdy mattress is that it’s a big, sturdy mattress. Whereas in-a-box mattresses enable DIY set-up and a literal flexibility that allows them to be carried with relative ease, the Saatva keeps its shape. For the most part that won’t be an issue, but if you’re looking to move the mattress around your home, or—god forbid—transport one in a vehicle, this is no “I’ll just fold it into the back of my SUV” situation. Then again, if the worst thing that can be said about a mattress is “it’s difficult to move,” that’s not too shabby.
Alternatives
Obviously if you prefer a mattress that’s strictly memory foam, the Classic might not be for you—although the three-inch pillow top really balances out the coils. If you’re looking for a memory foam mattress, we’ve rated the Tuft and Needle T&N Original as our top pick thanks to the affordable price ($895 for a queen) and still-supportive design. Just looking for a more affordable hybrid? The DreamCloud Hybrid starts at $649 for a queen and combines wrapped coils with a gel memory foam for a perfect blend of soft and supportive.
Is the Saatva Classic Mattress Worth It?
The Saatva Classic has been our top mattress recommendation for quite a few years now, and we don’t envision that changing anytime soon. While the price tag is a bit more than some of our more affordable recommendations, it’s a wonderful feeling to know you’re not getting a mass-produced product delivered to your doorstep and it’s a bigger relief that this level of service won’t run you in the five-digit price range.
At the same time, it’s a clear financial commitment, so we say skip it if you don’t plan on using this mattress for years to come. If you’re quite literally tired of using an old, saggy bed and want to make the adult decision of investing in a premium mattress, Saatva has to be at the top of your list. Plus, the free year-long trial at home makes things even easier and stress-free which is the way it should be. It also proves just how confident the brand is in its products and that’s a company worth paying attention to.
