There was an Advise & Consent moment before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday morning—that is if, instead of Charles Laughton and Henry Fonda, Advise & Consent were cast with the Marx Brothers.

Let us pause briefly to consider Senator Eric Schmitt (R-Missouri). The man lacks only a red rubber nose and some floppy shoes. On Tuesday, as former special counsel Jack Smith hauled his stolid self up to a Senate committee room to listen to Republicans rant and rave about his investigations into the previous depredations of the current president, Schmitt drank most deeply from the dribble glass of stupid. Gaze in awe.

Schmitt is fairly glowing with triumph. He accuses Smith of having attended an Atlanta Hawks game, probably as a cover for a covert meeting with Fani Willis, who was prosecuting the president at the time for jacking around with the election in Georgia in 2020. Schmitt presents his evidence by quickly flashing a poster board. At this point, Smith is looking at Schmitt as if the senator has two heads. Schmitt winds up his grab for glory by accusing Smith of having perjured himself over the alleged Hawks game, and by calling him a “dirtbag.”

Senator Amy Klobuchar rides to sanity’s rescue. As it turns out, Smith did attend a basketball game on the day in question. He went to see Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes play the University of Maryland. Klobuchar leads the dialogue to the conclusion that Schmitt, that clown, had mistaken the Iowa Hawkeyes with the Atlanta Hawks. You can see the glow disappear from Schmitt’s face. This farce of a committee meeting went on, forcing me to renew my appeal to my fellow citizens. Vote for conservatives if you must. But, please, stop electing idiots to high office. It’s a millstone on the rest of us.
