Matheson LLP has appointed Gerry Thornton as Head of Tax.
He will lead Matheson’s market-leading tax practice, the largest of any Irish law firm.
Thornton succeeds Shane Hogan, who was recently appointed as Managing Partner of the firm.
He has been a partner in Matheson’s Tax Department since 2011, advising on all aspects of corporate tax, and his practice includes fund formation, acquisitions, disposals, leasing and tax disputes.
Thornton advises many leading private fund managers and sponsors, financial institutions and multinational corporations.
He is considered one of Ireland’s leading tax lawyers and has played a central role in the continued growth and development of Matheson’s tax practice.
Commenting on the appointment, Hogan, Managing Partner of Matheson, said: “I am delighted to announce Gerry’s appointment as Head of Tax.
“He is an exceptional adviser with deep technical expertise, outstanding commercial judgement and a strong commitment to client service. Thornton holds a law degree from Trinity College Dublin and is a member of the Law Society of Ireland and the Irish Taxation Institute.
He is also actively involved in shaping Ireland’s financial services industry, serving on the tax steering committee of Irish Funds, having chaired its international tax working group for many years.
Matheson’s nearly 80-strong Tax Department, led by 18 partners, advises domestic and international clients across all areas of Irish and international taxation.
