Following her latest hosting gig on Saturday Night Live, the Verity actor attended the show’s traditional after-party, which ended up doubling as a birthday party for her when the clock struck midnight and she turned 37.
For the festive occasion, Johnson turned to the archives, pulling a black velvet coat from the Dries Van Noten Fall/Winter 2016 ready-to-wear collection. Like a constellation map, the inky outerwear was decorated with silvery studs in astral patterns that looked like stars lighting up the night sky—a perfect choice for a night on the town.

Johnson layered the robe-like coat over some more velvet: a strapless black sweetheart dress from Saint Laurent. The minidress was so tiny that it was completely concealed by the jacket, but Johnson kept the midnight theme going by slipping into a pair of mesh pumps from Aquazzura to match.
The real scene-stealer, though, was Johnson’s Silvia Gnecchi handbag. Over the last few decades, everyone from Paris Hilton to Dua Lipa has demonstrated the power of a chainmail dress on your birthday, but here, Johnson made the case for the chainmail bag.
The Materialists star carried the brand’s Miranda bag, which features see-through hand-woven gold mesh, like a chainlink fence, and a chunky silver strap. The top of the bag is decorated with galvanized brass discs, like large coins, along the top.
