The decade-long cultural resurgence of Dungeons & Dragons and tabletop role-playing games was destined to inspire a wave of fiction. While comic readers have Kieron Gillen’s DIE and cozy rom-com enthusiasts have Kristy Boyce, horror heads finally have an RPG-inspired book of their own: The Ship of Death, by Kyle Winkler.

A couple who play-test board games to make ends meet are given a mysterious new role-playing game. As they play and discover its true haunted nature, the boundaries between reality and fantasy blur. Told entirely through rule-book excerpts, emails, and police reports, The Ship of Death is an engrossing mix of H.P. Lovecraft and The Blair Witch Project that will frighten Dungeon Crawler Carl superfans.

The Need, by Megan Mostyn-Brown

If you’ve seen the TV shows Gotham and NOS4A2, you’ve probably watched Megan Mostyn-Brown’s work. Now you can read it in her literary debut, The Need. In Mostyn-Brown’s story, “The Need” is a rare genetic disorder in which the afflicted harbor a desire to consume flesh. One family struggles to keep a son’s “sickness” a secret; the other, a wealthy and elite dynasty from New York City, relishes in its hunger. Despite their different worlds, their shared hunger puts them on a collision course. Marinated in themes like envy, power, and shame, this is a disease-themed horror you can really sink your teeth into.

Carrie Lee South makes a splashy debut with a spine-chilling gothic horror about the immortal bonds of siblings. A prose-novel spin-off of the hit comics by James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera, Something Is Killing the Children: Hope Is a Knife—cowritten by Tynion and horror writer Kiersten White—follows comics protagonist Erica Slaughter, who ventures to a small town in Idaho to investigate the murder of a 12-year-old girl. Was it a bear? Another person? Or something much worse? With a charismatic preacher stirring up a ruckus, time is running out for Erica to find out who summoned the monster—and what kind—before it’s too late.

While existing fans of the Slaughterverse will enjoy a new tale, this prequel (set a year before the comics begin) is accessible to anyone looking for adventure in America’s darker corners.

Wendig’s Fiends series is off to a great start with a devilishly great family drama that feels ready-made for HBO.

The leading figure of the New Weird movement delivers a supernatural spy epic 20 years in the making. Odessa, by Gabrielle Sher

Now 19% Off

Debut author Gabrielle Sher spins a yarn of monster and demonic horror rooted in Jewish mysticism. At the height of the early-20th-century pogroms in Russia, a grieving family turns to dark magic to bring brilliant teenage daughter Yetta back after she’s murdered. But while “Yetta” looks like the same beautiful girl, she is not. And something terrifying lurks in the woods beyond the little village.

A spellbinding fusion of history, gothic horror, and family grief, Odessa is tragically beautiful and harrowing and feels primed for A24 to adapt into the next big thing.

Blacktail, by Scott Hawkins

Scott Hawkins’s acclaimed sophomore novel, Blacktail, is an epic revenge fantasy seeping with feral rage. After humans kill his mate and their unborn children, the wolf Blacktail is informed by a witchy cat that he could have revenge by ending men and their world for good. How? Find and wake the Forest God. Sounds easy enough.

Hawkins’s second book after The Library at Mount Char has drawn critical acclaim for its mixture of eco-horror and dark fantasy. Imagine a Disney movie for grown-ups; here, the talking animals have real blood dripping from their razor maws.
