How Independent Radio’s 1,200 Road Safety Programs Could Revolutionize Public Awareness—and What It Means for Your Community’s Future
Have you ever caught yourself wondering why, despite all the technology and warnings, road accidents still make headlines far too often? Well, 21 independent radio stations across Ireland are tackling this head-on by teaming up to pump out a whopping 1,200 road safety programmes over the next few months. It’s not just another run-of-the-mill campaign; this initiative is all about shining a brutal spotlight on the harsh, life-altering aftermath of road collisions and pushing practical, no-nonsense tips to keep us all safer behind the wheel. Minister of State for Road Safety, Seán Canney, didn’t mince words when he called the rise in road deaths “simply unacceptable” – and rightly so. With nearly half of all radio listening happening in cars, it makes perfect sense to meet drivers where they are, right on the airwaves. This concerted effort from a diverse lineup of local stations shows real heart and smarts, weaving community-focused stories and advice that could quite literally save lives. Twenty-one independent radio stations across Ireland are joining forces to broadcast 1,200 road safety programmes over the coming months in response to the rise in road deaths and serious injuries.
The initiative will use factual programming to highlight the often tragic and life-changing consequences of road collisions, while promoting practical measures that can help make Ireland’s roads safer.
Minister of State for Road Safety Seán Canney welcomed the campaign, saying he was “very encouraged” by independent stations combining to promote road safety across the airwaves.
“The number of lives lost on our roads is simply unacceptable and for every life lost another 10 people suffer often life-changing serious injuries,” Minister Canney said.
He urged motorists to adopt basic road safety habits, including slowing down, putting away mobile phones, wearing seatbelts and never driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The campaign will feature multiple episodes produced specifically for each participating station, with the content aimed at reaching communities across the country.
The stations said the initiative will have particular relevance to motorists, with 41% of radio listening in Ireland taking place in vehicles.

The participating stations are C103, Clare FM, Ireland’s Classic Hits, East Coast FM, Galway Bay FM, Highland Radio, KFM, KCLR96FM, Live 95, LMFM, Midlands 103, Midwest Radio, Northern Sound, Ocean FM, Q102, Radio Nova, Shannonside, South East Radio, Sunshine 106.8, Tipp FM and WLR.
