It’s a rare occurrence to see Miley Cyrus on stage these days. While the Grammy-winning superstar spent the early years of her career touring the world in blonde wigs, she’s slowly stepped away from the traditional concert tour. In recent years, she’s opted for more intimate settings, like her Spotify Billions Club performance, which she held at Maxim’s restaurant in Paris last June, or her surprise pop-up sets at Bemelmans Bar and 3 Dollar Bill in New York City. In fact, after the release of her ninth studio album, Something Beautiful, she even went on to say she had “no desire” to do another large headlining tour due to the difficulties it poses for her mental health and sobriety journey. “I do have the physical ability, and I have the opportunities to tour,” she told Good Morning America. “I wish I had the desire, but I don’t.”

So, when Cyrus announced that she would be taking the stage at the Hollywood Bowl amphitheater in Los Angeles for two nights only, it was no surprise that she brought her all—and an arsenal of knockout looks from Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello—to make it happen.

For the sold-out shows, Cyrus teamed up with her longtime stylist, Bradley Kenneth, to create a sleek, rock ‘n’ roll-inspired display that perfectly encapsulate her new Bass Persuades era. That consisted of pieces like a black leather newsboy cap and a floor-length fur coat. In other moments, she wore a chiffon cape romper and knee-high leather boots.

“There’s an effortless confidence to Saint Laurent that really resonates with Miley,” Kenneth said in an exclusive interview with Harper’s Bazaar. “This era has really been about stripping back the fashion and putting the music first. Miley is in such a beautiful place in her life right now. She’s happy, self-assured, and confident, and she wanted the fashion to reflect that without overpowering her.”

Ahead, Kenneth speaks about curating the collection of chic, all-black looks that Cyrus wore for her Hollywood Bowl shows. Plus, he opens up about her love affair with Saint Laurent, her constant evolution, and where her fashion stands today.

You have long styled Cyrus in looks from Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello. Why do his designs resonate so strongly with you both? What is it about the brand that pulls her in?

Anthony is brilliant in the way he can make something minimal feel incredibly elevated. His ability to work with textures and silhouettes in a way that never feels overpowering, but always remains cool and chic, is something I’ve always loved about his designs.

There’s an effortless confidence to Saint Laurent that really resonates with Miley. The clothes feel timeless and modern while still maintaining that sexy, rock ‘n’ roll attitude that’s always been part of her DNA. Especially in this era, when we’re intentionally stripping things back, his designs feel like such a natural fit. They have a strong point of view without ever taking away from the woman wearing them.

Additionally, how does it feel to have this special moment arrive right as Vaccarello has announced his departure from Saint Laurent? Does it feel like a swan song in a way?

Anthony has created such an incredible legacy at Saint Laurent, and Miley and I have shared so many special moments wearing his designs over the years. I’ve always admired his ability to make something feel elevated while still maintaining that effortless, cool sophistication.

In a way, it does feel like a beautiful full-circle moment. The Hollywood Bowl looks really represent where Miley is creatively right now, and Anthony’s designs captured that so perfectly. It’s special to celebrate this chapter of his work while also celebrating a new chapter in Miley’s evolution. I’m excited to see what he does next.

How would you describe the style aesthetic of the Bass Persuades era? How did that inform the looks you curated for the Hollywood Bowl shows?

This era has really been about stripping back the fashion and putting the music first. Miley is in such a beautiful place in her life right now. She’s happy, self-assured, and confident, and she wanted the fashion to reflect that without overpowering her. The idea was to keep things minimal, chic, and effortless, allowing who she is today to be the focal point.

For the Hollywood Bowl, we wanted to carry that same philosophy onto the stage. The Saint Laurent looks played with strong tailoring, sheer elements, leather, and fur, but everything was kept relatively simple. There was a sense of ease to the wardrobe that felt really important.

The clothes still needed to have an impact, especially in a venue as iconic as the Hollywood Bowl, but ultimately we wanted Miley to shine through. It was about creating a wardrobe that felt elevated and sophisticated, but still unmistakably her.

How does the fashion of Bass differ from the fashion of Something Beautiful? For that era, you and Cyrus leaned a lot into archival and I know Thierry Mugler’s 1995 couture show was a key influence as well. Were there any touchpoints that inspired this era?

Something Beautiful was such a fashion-forward era. We really embraced the fantasy of fashion through incredible archival pieces, couture, and dramatic silhouettes. Thierry Mugler’s 1995 couture collection was a huge influence, and the fashion played such an important role in defining the visual identity of that project.

One thing I’ve always loved about Miley is that with every new era, she tends to do the opposite of what you might expect. She never wants to repeat herself, and I think that’s what makes each chapter feel so distinct.

With Bass Persuades, we almost went in the complete opposite direction. After an era where the fashion was such a major part of the storytelling, Miley wanted to pull everything back and let the music and who she is today take center stage.

We were inspired by effortless, chic style and that classic rock ‘n’ roll attitude where the clothes feel lived-in and natural. There’s something so cool about the simplicity of throwing on your favorite jeans and a tank top and not needing anything else. That was really the spirit we wanted to capture.

It’s still very much a considered fashion direction, but there’s a certain confidence in knowing when to hold back. Sometimes the most powerful statement is the simplest one.

You’ve long worked as Cyrus’s stylist. What is the best part of getting to collaborate with her?

Having worked with Miley for so long, I’ve been lucky enough to see so many different versions of her through her creative process and each era of her career. There’s always something new, but she also has this incredible ability to reference different parts of herself from the past and reinterpret them in a completely fresh way.

She is constantly evolving, which definitely keeps me on my toes! My job has always been to meet her where she is creatively and help bring that vision to life through fashion.

These concert looks, like Cyrus’s press shots for Bass Persuades, center around an all-black aesthetic. What was the intention behind this achromatic palette?

I think there’s something incredibly chic and timeless about black. It allows you to focus on the silhouette, the textures, and ultimately the person wearing the clothes.

Because this era has been so much about stripping things back, the palette felt like a natural extension of that idea. We didn’t want the fashion to feel distracting or overly complicated. Miley wanted to keep things minimal and let her presence and the music really be the focus.

What I love about Anthony’s designs is that even within such a simple palette, there’s so much depth. The contrast between sheer fabrics, leather, tailoring, and fur creates interest without needing a lot of color or embellishment.

There’s a confidence in that simplicity that feels really reflective of where Miley is right now.

What was the most challenging look to put together for this show? Was there one that was also particularly rewarding?

I think the challenge with a show like this was actually the simplicity of the wardrobe. When you’re working with such minimal looks, every detail becomes that much more important. The fit, the proportions, the way the fabric moves, everything has to be just right because there’s nothing to hide behind.

We also had to make sure everything worked for a live performance and felt comfortable and effortless on Miley.

One of my favorite looks was the opening look with the sheer black tank, high-waisted tailored trousers, and floor-length fur coat. It’s such a simple silhouette, but there’s something incredibly powerful about it. I love that it makes such a strong statement without feeling overdone.

Ultimately, the most rewarding part was seeing Miley bring everything to life. The whole intention of this era was to let her shine, and seeing her onstage, completely confident and comfortable in who she is, was exactly what we wanted the fashion to reflect.
