From Sex and the City’s Miranda Hobbes and her marriage to Steve Brady, to The Gilded Age’s Ada Forte and her late-in-life romance with Reverend Luke Fort, Cynthia Nixon has starred in her fair share of complicated love stories on screen. But the actress’s real-life relationship is a far more enduring (and script-worthy) one.

Nixon has been married to her wife, Christine Marinoni, since 2012, but their relationship dates back even further. The couple was together for nearly a decade before they were able to legally tie the knot in New York. And their relationship is still going strong, more than 20 years later.

Earlier this year, Nixon celebrated their 14th wedding anniversary with a sweet selfie on Instagram, writing, “My wife Christine and I have been together for 22 years but today is our 14th wedding anniversary. Falling in love with Christine was the best thing I ever did (next to having our children).”

Like Nixon, Marinoni is a New Yorker and a longtime LGBTQ+ rights activist. But beyond her high-profile marriage, who is she? Ahead, everything to know about Christine Marinoni, from her impressive career to her enduring love story with Cynthia Nixon.

She attended Columbia University.

Originally from Washington state, Marinoni moved to New York City in the early 1990s, where she began working as a neighborhood organizer in the Bronx. She then attended Columbia University, earning a degree in economic development. According to The New York Times, Marinoni initially planned to work in international affairs but instead began a career in community and education organizing.

She opened a lesbian coffee shop and bar in Brooklyn.

Marinoni came out as a lesbian in 1995 and soon after opened the Rising Cafe, a lesbian coffee shop and bar in Park Slope, Brooklyn, with her friend Rena Blake. The neighborhood gathering spot hosted sporting events, musical performances, literary events, and poetry readings, offering a safe space for the local queer community.

The cafe, which sadly closed in 2003, also became an unexpected catalyst for Marinoni’s LGBTQ+ advocacy. In an interview with City & State New York, she recalled that one of the bar’s employees was the victim of a hate crime after leaving the premises. Marinoni and her colleagues later organized events to raise awareness of the incident and call for greater police protection for the community. The experience led her to pursue activism.

She helped found the Alliance for Quality Education.

In the early 2000s, Marinoni helped establish the Alliance for Quality Education, a New York-based organization that advocates for educational equity and fair school funding. Her work with the organization eventually brought her into Nixon’s orbit: The actress became a spokesperson for the group, and the two connected through their advocacy.

She and Cynthia started out as friends.

After meeting through the Alliance of Quality Education, Marinoni and Nixon initially bonded over their shared activism, becoming friends before their relationship turned romantic in 2004. At the time, Nixon had recently separated from her long-term boyfriend, Danny Mozes, with whom she shares two children. The pair was together for 15 years before splitting in 2003.

Nixon had never dated a woman before, which the actress said gave Marinoni pause at the start of their relationship. “I had never dated a woman before or even kissed a woman or anything,” Nixon said in an interview with Radio Times. “When we started seeing each other, Christine kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, for me to panic about what this would mean—to my career or to myself—as if somehow I just hadn’t noticed that she was a woman. And then she met my mother, and that was when she stopped worrying about it.”

They announced their engagement at a marriage equality rally.

In April 2009, Marinoni and Nixon announced their engagement at a marriage equality rally in New York. Nixon proudly showed off her diamond ring to the crowd, declaring, “It’s time already,” according to People. The couple’s engagement came as New York continued its fight to legalize same-sex marriage statewide.

Nixon, who was born and raised in New York City, made her stance clear: She would wait to marry Marinoni until same-sex marriage was legalized in the state.

Christine and Cynthia officially married in 2012.

The Marriage Equality Act took effect in New York State on July 24, 2011, legalizing same-sex marriage. Less than a year later, Nixon and Marinoni tied the knot in New York City on May 27, 2012. For the ceremony, Nixon wore a pale-green Carolina Herrera gown, while Marinoni opted for a suit finished with a matching green tie.

She joined Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration.

Marinoni has continued her career in public service under New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, serving as chief of mass engagement in the Department of Education’s Family and Community Empowerment (FACE) division. In the role, she focuses on strengthening connections between families, communities, and the city’s public school system. She previously held a position in former Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration as well.
