This Politician’s Crushing Defeat Is Shaking Up Everything—And You Won’t Believe Why I’m Laughing So Hard About It!
Ever wonder if some politicians just keep showing up like that annoying song you can’t get out of your head—no matter how hard you try? Well, enter Kris Kobach of Kansas, a man whose name almost feels like an inside joke with those triple K’s tagging along. He’s the poster child of persistent controversy, forever tangled in voter-suppression schemes, fanciful claims about voter fraud, and enough eyebrow-raising policies to fill a political textbook. Just when I thought we waved goodbye after his lost bids for governor and senator, and even after his entanglement in Steve Bannon’s infamous Build the Wall project, he pops back up—this time as Kansas attorney general. And guess what? As election results roll in, it looks like he might finally be facing another defeat. Could this be the curtain call for Mr. Triple K? Only time, and the vote count, will tell. This one is for me. Pardon me while I bust a gut.
Kris Kobach of Kansas—and never has a phrase with three K’s been more apt—is one of the founding weasels of the modern voter-suppression effort. If there is an odious policy position concocted since 2008, Kobach has run the laboratory that produced it. Imaginary voter fraud? Kobach led the farcical election-integrity commission during Trump I that fell apart after a contentious 2017 hearing in New Hampshire at which Kobach’s contentions were disemboweled by Maine secretary of state Matthew Dunlap. Draconian immigration policies? As Kansas secretary of state, Kobach tried to initiate a “proof of citizenship” law that lined him up on the wrong side of the League of Women Voters. Outright racism? Kobach told a radio program that the Obama administration was not far from a call for an end to all prosecutions of African Americans. If there was an ur-Trumper before Trump, it was Kris Kobach.
I thought we were rid of him when he ran for governor in 2018 and lost. I thought we were rid of him when he ran for the Senate in 2020 and lost. I thought we were rid of him when he got tangled up with Steve Bannon’s Build the Wall scam. But he was like the shingles virus in the body politic. He got elected Kansas attorney general in 2022.
And, on Tuesday, and extending into Thursday afternoon, it looks as though Kris Kobach might have lost another election. May it be his last.
