When news first broke of a Madonna biopic, fans of the iconic pop sensation were thrilled at the thought of seeing the story of the 67-year-old brought to life on the big screen. Furthermore, when people heard that none other than Julia Garner, known for her work in series like Ozark and Inventing Anna, was cast in the lead role, the excitement only increased. In the time since news of the film first broke, there have been many changes made to the original vision for the film—the singer has even paired up with Shawn Levy for a Netflix series telling her story. While many were led to believe the original film project was scrapped, Julia Garner recently revealed that as far as she knew, it was still in the works. Here, everything we know about Madonna’s upcoming biopics and what she’s said about them.
Madonna’s biopic film starring Julia Garner
It was back in 2020 when chattering first began that a Madonna biopic was in the works, and soon enough, it was revealed that Madonna would be playing an important role behind the scenes. At the time, it was said that the singer would be directing the film on her own and teaming up with Diablo Cody to write the film. Additionally, Madonna was said to join forces with Amy Pascal in producing. “I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer—a human being, trying to make her way in this world,” said Madonna in a press release. “The focus of this film will always be music. Music has kept me going and art has kept me alive. There are so many untold and inspiring stories and who better to tell it than me. It’s essential to share the roller coaster ride of my life with my voice and vision.”

During a 2021 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Madonna got candid about her decision to be hands-on with the film process, detailing past experiences she had with those who had attempted to tell her story on the screen.
“[Universal] sent me a script and they wanted my blessing and I read it and it was one of the most hideous, superficial, crap I’ve ever read. And then I found out—I’m not even going to say his name but he’s a total misogynist—was directing and I’m thinking ‘Why would these people make a movie about my life?’” She continued, “There’s nothing true in the script. The guy who’s making it has no understanding of women, no appreciation of women, no respect for women. This happened a couple of times and I had to call people up, call up the heads of studios, call up my agents, and threaten them and say that I will stand in front of the building and protest and make everyone’s life a misery if they go through with it…and they still didn’t take me seriously.”
Though her 2023 Celebration Tour is allegedly what put a pin in production of the film, Julia Garner, who was cast to portray Madonna in the film, recently shared that it was still happening. During an appearance on the SmartLess Podcast, she opened up about the movie, saying it’s “supposed to still happen.”

Madonna’s Netflix series
Earlier this year, it was revealed that Madonna would be teaming up with Shawn Levy for a limited series about her life, as reported by Variety. Though not much is known about it at the time, it seems as though it’s a separate entity from the film.
