Since Outlander’s first season, fans have been swooning over Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan’s undeniable on-screen chemistry. But off-screen, Balfe is actually married to Anthony “Tony” McGill, who she’s been with for over a decade now.

The Irish actor announced her engagement to McGill at the 2018 Golden Globe Awards, and the pair tied the knot the following year. True to their private nature, the couple has largely stayed out of the spotlight—rarely appearing together on red carpets and keeping their relationship intimate and low-key. In 2021, they quietly welcomed their first child, a son.

So, who is the man who captured Balfe’s heart? Ahead, find everything to know about Tony McGill, the Irish music producer and businessman married to the Outlander star.

Like Balfe, McGill hails from Ireland, and they each share deep roots in their home country. In a 2021 interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Balfe spoke of her love of Ireland: “I have such a love for the people of Ireland, and I think when you have left, sometimes, it can be quite a complicated relationship you have with your home.”

In 2021, Balfe told The Wall Street Journal that she and her beau now live between London and Glasgow. “Today, my husband, Tony, and I and our son are slightly nomadic. We split our time between Glasgow and London. When I’m working on Outlander, we’re in Glasgow.”

He’s a music producer.

According to People, McGill is a music producer, band manager, and the owner of a record label that’s based in London. He also previously owned a bar in the British capital.

He and Caitríona met through friends.

In a 2018 appearance on The Late Late Show, Balfe revealed how she and McGill were introduced: “I met him through one of my best friends, which I think is the best kind of introduction you can get.”

The couple was first linked in 2015, when actor Donal Brophy posted a video showing Balfe sitting on McGill’s lap. A year later, they attended Jodie Foster’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony together, marking their first official joint public appearance.

Caitríona announced their engagement in 2018.

Balfe revealed the news of her and McGill’s engagement at the 2018 Golden Globes. The Outlander star wore her diamond engagement ring on the red carpet, telling People, “It happened over the break. I’m very happy.”

They married in 2019.

Balfe and McGill tied the knot with a low-key, secret wedding in August 2019. As People reports, “It was a close-knit family affair officiated by Rev. Louis Beasley-Suffolk, who performed a Roman Catholic service.” The religious ceremony took place in St. Mary’s Church in Bruton, Somerset, in the south of England.

The couple didn’t share any wedding photos on social media, but Balfe told The Philippine Daily Inquirer in 2020: “What was most beautiful about it is that I had my very close family and friends there.”

Balfe’s Outlander co-star, Sam Heughan, was reportedly in attendance at the wedding, and he shared a photo to Instagram that appeared to be of his ceremony ’fit.

He prefers to stay out of the spotlight.

McGill has only attended a few public events with Balfe in their decade together. During an appearance on The Late Late Show in 2018, the actor said of her husband: “He’s a very shy person and doesn’t like much talking about him.”

The only major award show red carpet he’s walked with Balfe was the 2020 Academy Awards.

The couple welcomed a son in 2021.

Balfe and McGill welcomed their first child, a son, on August 18, 2021. Balfe kept her entire pregnancy out of the spotlight, announcing the birth of their son on Instagram with a black-and-white photo of the baby’s hand holding her finger.

“I’ve been off socials for a while as I was taking some time to enjoy cooking up this little human,” she captioned the post. “We are so grateful for this little soul… that he chose us as his parents.”

Much like the privacy of their relationship, the couple has chosen not to share any other details about their son, including his name, with the public.

“When you have a kid, you become really protective,” Balfe told Vanity Fair. “I don’t want those crazies—because that’s what they are—I just don’t want them talking about him.”
