When Jessica Tucker’s SUV burst into flames, she could have lost everything, including her 6-month-old baby boy. Luckily, a hero—who had lost his own child years earlier—arrived in the nick of time! Here, they share their story.
A miracle rescue
Driving along the Garfield County, Colorado, highway Jessica Tucker barely saw the car jump the median. She swerved to avoid it, but the impact sent her SUV spinning.
When her 4Runner came to a rest, Jessica’s thoughts were muddled. Her wrist was shattered and her baby in the backseat…was utterly silent.
Alec Larson was on his way to a carpet cleaning job when he spotted the accident. He pulled over, grabbed a pair of scissors—the closest tool at hand—and dashed toward the crash.
Others slowed to help, but Alec was first to reach the SUV. Thankfully, the door was unlocked and opened easily. “Are you OK?” he asked, but Jessica was too dazed to speak.
“I need to get you out!” he said, reaching inside and unbuckling her belt. Gently, he lifted Jessica and carried her a few feet from the SUV, and that was when he spotted the dripping gas and fire beneath the car. “We’re too close,” he said and carried her much further.
Just as he set Jessica down, her eyes cleared momentarily and she yelled, “My baby! What happened to my baby?”
Life-saving act of kindness
Alec raced back toward the SUV, haunted by the memory of losing his own child, Sophia, years earlier in a tragic accident. “Please, God—not again!” he prayed as he reached the window and saw the infant lying unmoving in his car seat.
The door was locked, and he couldn’t break the window. So as the fire spread across the undercarriage, he rushed to the rear hatch, ready to pry the lock with his scissors.
Miraculously, the hatch was unlocked, but by now the air vents were billowing smoke. The fire was still spreading!
“Please be okay,” he prayed, and when he climbed inside and peered over the back seat the baby boy’s eyes focused, and the infant gave Alec a big smile.
Alec fumbled with the buckle, but it refused to open. But he had the scissors, and they sliced through the belt easily.
Alec lifted the car seat and scrambled out of the 4Runner then ran far enough away from it. “I got you,” he comforted the crying infant just as the SUV behind them exploded into a raging fireball.
EMTs rushed Jessica to the hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery to save her wrist. Her husband, Scott, and their son were waiting for her when she woke up hours later.
“Not a scratch on the baby,” he told his worried wife. “And the doctor says you’re going to be fine,” Scott happily reported.
Later that evening, a friend told Jessica, “I read about the accident on Facebook, and the guy who saved you is named Alec. We went to high school together. Want me to call him?”
“Please,” said Jessica, and when she got him on the phone, her eyes filled with tears as she told him, “You didn’t just save me, you saved my whole world!”
Weeks later, the sheriff’s department held a ceremony to honor Alec with a hero award. As Jessica placed the medal around his neck she whispered, “You’ll always be my hero.”
“I know what it’s like to lose a child,” Alec whispered back. “I’m so happy I could stop it from happening to another loving parent.”
