So here we are again—a politically seething shooting at a Dallas ICE facility, leaving two detainees dead and one clinging to life. The shooter, Joshua Jahn, took his own life after firing from an elevated position, with chilling “anti-ICE” messages etched onto a bullet nearby. Now, here’s the kicker: was this a sniper targeting ICE agents or the detainees themselves? That question is already sparking the same tired political arguments before all the facts are in. Another day, another politically fraught murder in a country with too many goddamn guns. From NBC News:

Three detainees were shot at an ICE facility in Dallas this morning, the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement.

Two people are dead, and the third is in critical condition, according to DHS. No ICE officers were hurt in the shooting, Dallas police said in a news conference. The victims’ identities will not be released at this time.

The suspect, who was found dead with a self-inflicted gun wound, has been identified as Joshua Jahn, according to multiple senior law enforcement officials briefed on the investigation.

One bullet found near the shooter contained messages that were “anti-ICE in nature,” Special Agent in Charge of the Dallas FBI Joe Rothrock said at a news conference. He added that the attack was an act of “targeted violence.” The shooter fired multiple rounds from a nearby roof or an elevated position down into the field office’s sally port, an ICE spokesperson confirmed. The motive behind the shooting, or what the shooter was targeting, is not immediately clear.

While shaving, William of Ockham mused to me that the sniper must have been there to shoot detainees because only detainees were hit. However, some conservative politicians predictably leaped into the discussion. They were quick to imply that the ICE agents were the sniper’s real targets. FBI director Kash Patel led the pack:

While the investigation is ongoing, an initial review of the evidence shows an idealogical motive behind this attack. One of the unspent shell casings recovered was engraved with the phrase “ANTI ICE.” More updates will be forthcoming. These despicable, politically motivated attacks against law enforcement are not a one-off. We are only miles from Prarieland, Texas where just two months ago an individual ambushed a separate ICE facility targeting their officers. It has to end and the FBI and our partners will lead these investigative efforts to see to it that those who target our law enforcement are pursued and brought to the fullest extent of justice. Thankfully, no law enforcement personnel were injured. Please pray for the injured and deceased.
