3 min readThe Hawaiian islands of O‘ahu and Maui are experiencing the worst flooding the U.S. state has seen in over two decades, with residents being forced to evacuate their homes due to ongoing storms that could ultimately cause over $1 billion in damage.
Beginning late on Thursday and going into the weekend, North Shore residents were hit with a range of 20 to 40 inches of rain from Kona Low storms, and over 5,000 people were asked to evacuate their homes and migrate to the state’s capital, Honolulu.
According to the BBC, cities such as Lahaina and Kahului received a year’s worth of rain in just a matter of days. Floodwaters were so bad that cars, and even homes, were swept away by rushing water, while muddy storm sediment rushed into countless residences.
On Sunday, more than 2,000 people remained without power. So far, there have been no reported deaths, but hundreds of people have had to be rescued from the floods.
Late on Sunday evening, Governor Josh Green shared a press release stating that state offices and operations would be reopening, but recovery efforts were still very much ongoing. “The strength of Hawaii is our people,” the governor wrote. “Throughout this storm, we saw neighbors helping neighbors, communities stepping up and our emergency teams working tirelessly to keep everyone safe. I want to thank our essential workers and partners for their incredible dedication – and I am deeply grateful to the people of Hawaii for looking out for one another during this challenging time.”
