dmg media Ireland publications and journalists have been recognised with 22 nominations for the 2025 Irish Journalism Awards, in association with NewsBrands Ireland and supported by Google News Initiative

Craig Hughes and Maeve Quigley of the Irish Daily Mail, Michael O’Farrell of the Irish Mail on Sunday and dmg media group political editor John Lee were all shortlisted for multiple awards.

Hughes received nominations for News Reporter of the Year, Political Journalist of the Year and Scoop of the Year.

Lee was shortlisted for Campaigning Journalism, Crime Journalist of the Year, and Political Journalist of the Year, while his podcast From Bomb to Ballot: the History of Sinn Féin was recognised in the Podcast of the Year category.

O’Farrell was also nominated for Campaigning Journalism, Investigative Journalism and Scoop of the Year, while Quigley was shortlisted for Features Journalist of the Year (Popular) and Showbiz Journalist of the Year.

Three dmg media journalists were nominated for Columnist of the Year (Popular): Brenda Power, Mary Carr and Lisa Brady.

Jenny Friel was shortlisted for Features Journalist of the Year (Popular) alongside Quigley, and the Irish Daily Mail was spotlighted in the Front Page of the Year.

Extra.ie and Niamh Walsh made the Digital Innovation of the Year field, and Mark Gallagher and Shane McGrath of the Irish Mail on Sunday have been nominated for Sportswriter of the Year (Popular).

Sarah McGuinness of the Irish Daily Mail was shortlisted for Young Journalist of the Year.

In all, there are 23 categories spanning all areas of modern journalism, and entry is open to any work published in print, online, video, or audio in a national news title that is a member of the Press Council of Ireland and has a focus on national/international news.

The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on 12 November in Dublin’s Mansion House.

“Though Irish publishers compete fiercely for readers, what binds them together is their shared commitment to upholding ethics and standards in journalism. Sincere congratulations to all nominees.”
