For women in perimenopause and menopause, hormone therapy can be the difference between waking up every night at 3 a.m., having sweat through yet another pajama top, or getting a good night’s rest and feeling refreshed and ready in the morning. So when such a vital medication for so many women goes missing from pharmacy shelves, it’s big news.

Recent reports indicate that the U.S. is in the middle of an estrogen patch shortage, leaving women unable to access the hormone therapy they need to manage their symptoms. The patch, which adheres to the skin, delivers medication transdermally (rather than orally, like a pill), and has become a popular option for administering estrogen. In addition to night sweats, hormone replacement can help ease symptoms like hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and more.

So what’s driving this shortage? And what can you do if you’re affected? Editors Abby Cuffey and Carina Hsieh, MPH, break down this buzzy headline on the latest episode of The Huddle, the Women’s Health podcast where we talk sports, sweat, and everything in between.

One of the primary drivers for the shortage, experts say, is the increase in demand. Prescriptions for all forms of hormone replacement therapy have jumped 86 percent since 2021, per electronic health record data.

“In November, the FDA removed the black box warning, which has made a lot of people less hesitant to explore hormonal options,” Hsieh says of the growing demand.

But why are patches, in particular, such a popular option? Likely, for a few reasons. “I think ease of use,” Hsieh says. “It’s often the default therapy that you get.”

Another advantage of the patch over a pill, says Hsieh, is that the medication bypasses the liver. This may reduce the risk of side effects like blood clots and strokes, according to experts.

The good news is, there are several ways to work around this shortage—including other transdermal options—if you’re affected. To learn more, click play on the latest episode of The Huddle above.
