Experts rank the best bread for weight loss
All the breads on this list are good for your overall health when added to a balanced diet, and all have advantages for women trying to lose weight. Choose the one that appeals to you most—and let us know if you agree with these rankings.
#5 Whole-grain bread
Because whole grains have more fiber and other nutrients than refined grains, they routinely prove better at lowering hunger, preventing and improving blood-sugar issues and generally making it easier to reach your weight-loss goals. A Tufts University study even demonstrated that eating whole grains can increase metabolism.
“Since whole-grain bread is more difficult to digest, the process burns more calories,” notes Dr. Brown, who works with MyObesityTeam.com. “Whole-grain breads are also high in fiber, which causes us to feel full sooner” and supports healthy weight management. All of that said, there are a zillion types of bread that contain at least some whole-grain flour, and not all are created equal. So check the ingredients label. For best weight loss benefits, you want bread made with 100 percent whole wheat or whole grain flour. “And choose a brand with at least three grams of fiber and at least two grams of protein per slice,” adds Dr. Brown.
#4 Sourdough
Sourdough, which dates back to ancient Egypt, is having a moment on social media. Millions of home bakers (even Taylor Swift is a fan!) are sharing recipes and offering peeks at their sourdough starter, which is a mix of wild yeast and lactic acid bacteria used for leavening. Many also suggest the tangy loaves can help keep waists trim.
Science does back up the hype: An analysis in the journal Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition found whole-wheat sourdough typically keeps blood sugar significantly lower than either white bread or even whole-wheat bread made with commercially-cultured yeast—and this means sourdough has extra power to reduce hunger, cravings and fat storage.
Perhaps even more interesting, a study in Microbiology Spectrum found that sourdough helps promote a healthy gut microbiome. That means it feeds the trillions of beneficial bacteria that live in our guts. “Your microbiome helps your body with a lot of important functions, including digestion, immunity, blood sugar regulation and weight control,” says Robert J. Malcolm III, MD, a Pennsylvania-based gastroenterologist with St Luke’s University Health Network. “In my experience, nothing makes it easier to lose weight than a thriving microbiome. I’m a big fan of sourdough!”
Why didn’t sourdough rank higher? Because most options available in stores are made with refined white flour, and for the best weight-loss benefits, you’ll want to go for a whole-grain—either homemade whole-wheat sourdough bread or store-bought version (made by brands like Trader Joe’s, Nature’s Own or Bread Alone).
#3 Keto-friendly bread
When carb content is reduced in bread, it’s replaced in large part with fiber. Brands vary, but let’s look at Lewis Bake Shop keto-friendly bread, sold at Walmart and other large stores. Calorie for calorie, this low-carb offering has roughly quadruple the fiber (16 grams per 70 calories) of whole wheat bread. It also has triple the protein. “Both protein and fiber play a significant role in helping us feel full sooner,” says Dr. Brown. Adds Dr. Malcolm: “The fiber will also help nourish your microbiome. This type of bread is definitely one to consider.”
A few caveats: This is a more processed food, and may not control hunger for everyone. People who don’t eat a lot of fiber should add it gradually and give their bodies time to adjust. You should also check labels, as some keto-friendly breads can be quite high in calories, cautions Dr. Brown.
#2 Rye and pumpernickel
Scandinavia’s traditional whole-grain rye bread is a winner, experts say. A study in Nutrition Journal showed the extra-flavorful, fiber-rich stuff blows wheat bread out of the water, controlling hunger and killing cravings significantly better. And did we mention it’s delicious? Look for small dark bricks of it near pita and other international bakery items. It’s often marked “Dark European Rye,” and lists whole-grain rye as the first ingredient.
A note from Dr. Brown: Rye and pumpernickel bread can support optimal blood sugar control, which is a big key to dropping weight. To avoid canceling out this benefit, “make sure you buy a bread that doesn’t have added molasses or other forms of [added] sugar.”

#1 Sprouted-grain bread
If you’ve ever seen Ezekiel brand sprouted-grain breads in the store and wondered what they were all about, here’s the answer: Instead of being made from ordinary wheat or grains, they’re made from grains that are allowed to sprout or germinate before they’re ground into flour. “Germination changes the composition of the grain,” explains Dr. Brown. “It makes bread that’s lower in carbs, higher in protein and generally higher in fiber than most bread.”
Sprouting also makes nutrients in the grain easier for us to absorb. So we get extra vitamins, minerals and antioxidants from this type of bread—and that leads to extra health benefits. Research in the Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism even found that sprouted-grain bread beats other types of bread for controlling blood sugar. (See more foods that lower blood sugar.)
“Overall, I recommend sprouted grain breads most strongly for support of weight loss because they have more nutritional value, a higher fiber content and more protein than many other types of bread,” says Dr. Brown. “The germination process used in sprouted grain breads also supports a healthy gut microbiome, which is essential for optimal weight loss.”
The bottom line: If you love bread and want to lose weight, there are lots of loaves out there ready to rise to the challenge!
