Aldi Ireland has announced that it surpassed 6m meals donated to charities and communities through its partnership with FoodCloud.

Since the partnership began in 2014, Aldi and FoodCloud have worked together to get surplus food to people in need.

The 12-year partnership has seen an annual average of 500,000 meals, equivalent to approximately 2,500 tonnes of food, redistributed across Aldi’s nationwide network of 166 stores.

“We are delighted to have reached such a huge milestone with FoodCloud,” said Rachel Nugent, national sustainability manager at Aldi Ireland.

“Aldi takes the complication out of daily consumer decisions, whether that’s sourcing the best quality produce or effectively reducing food waste, and partnering with FoodCloud has helped maximise this objective.

“We already work proactively to prevent waste across our operations, but when surplus food does occur, we partner with amazing organisations such as FoodCloud to help ensure it is put to good use. We look forward to continuing this partnership and celebrating the next major milestone.”

The initiative works by connecting Aldi stores directly with community organisations through FoodCloud, ensuring that surplus consumable food is redistributed efficiently and safely.

To date, this partnership has prevented thousands of tonnes of food from going to waste, contributing significantly to Ireland’s circular economy and sustainability goals.

Rory O’Connell, account manager at FoodCloud, said: “Surpassing the 6m meal milestone is a testament to Aldi Ireland’s dedication to building a more sustainable food system.

“Since we began our journey together in 2014, Aldi has consistently demonstrated its commitment to our shared vision of ensuring that no good food goes to waste.

“We are incredibly proud of this partnership and the tangible, positive impact it continues to have on communities across Ireland.”

Aldi is currently completing a €5m solar retrofit programme, which has seen solar panels installed across 44 stores nationwide, providing roughly 30% of each store’s electricity needs.
