How dmg Media’s ExtraG Cracked the Code to Global Innovation—and What It Means for the Future of Irish Language Tech

What happens when you blend tradition with cutting-edge innovation and throw the Irish language into the mix? You get ExtraG, dmg media Ireland’s trailblazing Irish language platform that just snagged the Print-Digital Fusion Award at the WAN-IFRA Sustainability and Print Innovation Awards in Munich—talk about putting Irish media on the global map! This isn’t just another accolade; it’s recognition of how ExtraG brilliantly fuses print and digital storytelling to revive and modernize a language many thought was bound to the past. Imagine transforming everyday Irish from a classroom relic into engaging, accessible content that resonates across audiences—fluent speakers and learners alike. And if you think this is a one-off, think again. Earlier this year, ExtraG also grabbed Gold at The Media Awards in Dublin, and the momentum’s only building. So here’s the question: In a world flooded with digital content, could a bilingual Irish media platform really be setting the standard for how local culture thrives on a global stage? I’d say the future just whispered an emphatic “yes.” LEARN MORE

dmg media Ireland’s Irish language platform ExtraG has been recognised on the global stage, winning the Print-Digital Fusion Award at the WAN-IFRA Sustainability and Print Innovation Awards held in Munich.

The award honours the most innovative project worldwide that integrates print and digital storytelling, highlighting ExtraG’s success in bringing the Irish language into the modern media landscape.

Alongside ExtraG, the Malaysian Straits Times were a joint winner of the award.

ExtraG.ie, a dynamic offshoot of the popular Extra.ie website, was created to make everyday Irish accessible and engaging for a wide audience.

The platform has also been officially recognised as an Irish language medium by the Office of An Coimisinéir Teanga.

In February 2025, dmg media Ireland expanded its Irish language presence with the launch of ExtraG Gach Seachtain, a weekly supplement in the Irish Daily Mail, further strengthening its commitment to Irish-language media and extending the reach of the brand across multiple platforms.

The WAN-IFRA Awards are among the most respected honours in international publishing, celebrating innovation and sustainability in media.

In recognising dmg media Ireland’s achievement, WAN-IFRA said: “Ireland’s ExtraG Gach Seachtain, a weekly bilingual print and digital supplement from dmg media Ireland and the Irish Daily Mail was celebrated for its role in meeting new legislative requirements while unlocking cultural and commercial potential, bringing the Irish language to life for the next generation audience.”

The Munich recognition adds to a strong year for the initiative.

Earlier in 2025, ExtraG won Gold at The Media Awards in Dublin and was shortlisted for the Gradam Margaíochta le Gaeilge at the Marketing Institute of Ireland’s All Ireland Marketing Awards.

Joe Walsh, Editor of ExtraG.ie and ExtraG Gach Seachtain, said: “To see an Irish language media initiative recognised on a global stage is truly fantastic.

“ExtraG is dedicated to celebrating and promoting the Irish language, offering content that resonates with both fluent speakers and learners alike.”

Paul Henderson, CEO of dmg media Ireland, added: “ExtraG.ie delivers the most popular stories of the day through the Irish language.

“It’s the content people want—news, entertainment, sport—presented in a modern, accessible format.

“It’s not Irish for Irish’s sake; it’s relevant, engaging media that just happens to be in Irish. This global award win means a great deal to everyone at dmg media.”

The awards were presented during the annual World Printers Summit in Munich, where industry professionals from around the globe gathered to share ideas and celebrate excellence in print and media innovation.

Bronnadh Gradam Foilsitheoireachta Domhanda ar dmg media Ireland as a bhfoilseachán Gaeilge, ExtraG

Tá dmg media Ireland bródúil as a fhógairt gur bronnadh Gradam Chomhleá Priontála-Digitigh ar a n-ardán Gaeilge, ExtraG, ag Gradaim Inbhuanaitheachta agus Nuálaíochta Priontála WAN-IFRA, a bhfuil cáil idirnáisiúnta orthu, a tionóladh i München.

Tugann Gradam Chomhleá Priontála-Digitigh aitheantas don tionscadal domhanda is nuálaí a chomhtháthaíonn cló le huirlisí scéalaíochta digiteacha go rathúil.

Forbraíodh ExtraG.ie, síneadh bríomhar ar an suíomh gréasáin coitianta Extra.ie, chun an Ghaeilge laethúil a dhéanamh inrochtana do chách, ag tairiscint ábhar mealltach agus inbhainte do lucht léitheoireachta leathan. Tá an t-ardán aitheanta go hoifigiúil mar mheán Gaeilge ag Oifig an Choimisinéara Teanga.

I mí Feabhra 2025, leathnaigh dmg media a thairiscint Gaeilge le seoladh ExtraG Gach Seachtain, forlíonadh seachtainiúil a fhoilsítear leis an Irish Daily Mail, rud a léiríonn a thiomantas do na meáin chumarsáide Gaeilge agus a leathnaíonn raon feidhme ExtraG ar fud gach ardán meán dmg.

Tá Gradaim WAN-IFRA i measc na ngradam is mó meas i dtionscal na meán domhanda, ag ceiliúradh sármhaitheasa agus nuálaíochta san fhoilsitheoireacht agus san iriseoireacht.

Ag aitheantas an éachta domhanda seo, dúirt WAN IFRA faoin mbua a fuair dmg media Ireland: ‘Rinneadh ceiliúradh ar ExtraG Gach Seachtain na hÉireann, forlíonadh clóite agus digiteach seachtainiúil ó dmg media Ireland agus an Irish Daily Mail, as a ról i gcomhlíonadh ceanglais reachtacha nua agus ag an am céanna ag scaoileadh acmhainneacht chultúrtha agus tráchtála, ag tabhairt na Gaeilge chuig an chéad ghlúin eile.’

Leanann aitheantas ExtraG i München roinnt éachtaí rathúla le déanaí. Níos luaithe i mbliana, bhuaigh an tionscnamh an gradam Óir ag Gradaim na Meán i mBaile Átha Cliath agus cuireadh ar an ngearrliosta é do Ghradam Margaíochta le Gaeilge ag Gradaim Margaíochta Uile-Éireann ag Institiúid Margaíochta na hÉireann 2025.

Dúirt Joe Walsh, Eagarthóir ExtraG.ie agus ExtraG Gach Seachtain: “Is iontach an rud é tionscnamh meán Gaeilge a fheiceáil aitheanta ar an ardán domhanda. Tá ExtraG tiomanta don teanga a cheiliúradh agus a chur chun cinn, ag tairiscint ábhar a bhaineann le cainteoirí líofa agus le foghlaimeoirí araon.”

Dúirt Paul Henderson, Príomhfheidhmeannach dmg media Ireland: “Cuireann ExtraG.ie na scéalta is mó tóir trí mheán na Gaeilge. Is iad na scéalta atá ag teastáil ó dhaoine –  nuacht, siamsaíocht agus spórt –  a chuirtear i láthair i bhformáid nua-aimseartha, inrochtana.

‘Ní Gaeilge ar mhaithe leis an nGaeilge atá ann; is scéalta ábhartha, mealltacha iad a tharlaíonn a bheith i nGaeilge. Is ábhar mór áthais do gach duine ag dmg media an gradam domhanda seo.”

Bronnadh na gradaim le linn Chruinniú Mullaigh Dhomhanda na bPrintéirí, a tionóladh i München i mbliana, agus tháinig gairmithe ó gach cearn den tionscal priontála domhanda le chéile chun smaointe a roinnt agus chun éachtaí den scoth a cheiliúradh.
