We went looking for easy ways to burn excess belly fat, and TikTok quickly showed us a bazillion videos of folks making what some call “the perfect drink to get your stomach flat.” The most popular version is made by blending or juicing celery, cucumber, ginger, lemon and an optional green apple. Will a daily serving really shrink our middles as we lay on the couch eating pizza? Definitely not. Yet when we showed the recipe to experts, we were surprised how many good things they had to say about the benefits of celery juice.

“All the ingredients can be helpful, and the benefits of celery juice in particular can make it easier to get rid of belly fat and improve health overall,” says nutritionist Cherie Calbom, MS, author of Juicing for Life. Keep reading to learn more—and to get a simple version of the recipe to try for yourself.

3 celery juice benefits that help burn belly fat

Celery juice is the powerhouse of this drink, which is sometimes dubbed “belly burner juice.” Why? Well, no matter how you enjoy celery, here’s what you can expect from the humble veggie:

What is your favorite natural slimming drink?

It soothes hidden inflammation

Millions of us are stressed out and eating more processed food than ever before—key factors that cause inflammation to secretly rage inside us, says Calbom. That inflammation not only makes us feel lousy, it also releases compounds found to increase fat storage around our middles.

How can celery and celery juice help? Research published in the Journal of Evidence-Based Integrative Medicine shows it’s very high in flavonoid antioxidants like apigenin and luteolin, which have a powerful ability to reduce inflammation. And while research specifically on celery is limited, a German study found overweight participants who drank high-flavonoid juice “actively lost body fat”—about 400 percent more—than those given low-flavonoid juice.

It’s super hydrating

As we get older, “a microscopic barrier that keeps water in our cells begins to deplete,” shares Terry Dubrow, M.D., author of The Dubrow Keto Fusion Diet. So no matter how much we drink, our cells may not hang on to fluid needed for top-speed metabolism and countless other functions. He adds that dehydration stresses the body, and stress hormones promote belly fat.

“What makes celery juice so much more effective than plain water is its concentration of electrolytes,” he says. “It acts like a straw to bring hydration into cells and keep it there. The difference is amazing.” When Dr. Dubrow personally began focusing on getting lots of this celery juice, “I lost 16 pounds. Boom,” he says.

It blasts bloat

Improved hydration helps keep things moving through our GI tracts, another reason celery juice can flatten bellies. That was the case when Dr. Dubrow’s wife Heather began sipping the stuff. “At risk of embarrassing her, I’ll tell you that as she got a bit older, she had terrible constipation and bloating,” he says. “She’d eat clean and still go nine days straight without being able to get waste out of her GI tract. Celery juice was a glorious game-changer for her.”

More benefits of belly burner juice

TikTok’s drink also contains cucumbers, which Calbom says “are known to be a natural diuretic” that can help flush retained fluid around your belly or anywhere your body stores it.

Meanwhile, fresh ginger adds a spicy kick proven to temporarily boost metabolism and help improve levels of insulin, a hormone that regulates blood sugar by storing it as belly fat.

As for fresh lemon, its vitamin C has been shown to aid in fat burning in Arizona State University testing. “It can also help reduce belly-fattening stress hormones,” Calbom notes.

How use belly burner juice to lose weight

While belly burner juice is no miracle weight loss drink, it does have ingredients (like celery juice) that offer benefits when it comes to shedding pounds and shrinking your waist.

The juice can help hydrate and slim as part of any healthy eating plan. To get the benefits, aim to enjoy a 16-oz. serving daily. (Want a back up in case you run out of fresh produce? You can make celery juice from a mix like Dubrow Keto/Fusion Primo Celery. Just add a splash of lemon juice and a shake of powdered ginger.)

To maximize your weight-loss results, both Dr. Dubrow and Calbom recommend meals that emphasize protein and veggies plus a little healthy fat and low-sugar fruit; limit both carbs and processed food.
