This story contains spoilers for the Task season 1 finale. If you’re looking for the recap, you can read it here.

When the Task finale brought down the hammer, the idea of a second season of the HBO crime drama seemed impossible. I won’t spoil it up front for those who still haven’t seen it just yet, but the story felt like it reached its natural conclusion. We even asked creator Brad Ingelsby if a potential second season was in the cards when he spoke with Esquire last month; he said that he would “love to have a chance to do another season of Task.”

Well, Ingelsby has his chance, because Task season 2 is official and on the move.

Ingelsby announced the second season of his hit HBO series after a press conference in New York City in November 2025. He confirmed that Mark Ruffalo will return to lead the new season. “We’ve been incredibly fortunate to have HBO’s unwavering support of Task from the very first script onwards, throughout production, and during their extraordinary launch of our first season to audiences,” Ingelsby wrote in a statement to the press. “They are an unmatched creative home. On behalf of the entire Task team, in front of and behind the camera, I am honored and excited to get back to work on a second season of our show.”

Ruffalo won’t be alone. Joining the cast for season 2 is Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali, reported by Deadline on March 23. Ali is set to play a new professional rival to Ruffalo named Eddie Barnes. Deadline describes him as a “seasoned and well-respected DEA agent in Philadelphia whose team comes into conflict with Tom’s unit.”

The Mare of Easttown creator isn’t usually one to continue with a second season (see…Mare of Easttown), but maybe there’s an idea for FBI agent Tom Brandis (Ruffalo) to work on another case with other surviving members from Task season 1.

Hang in there, Tom. Season 2 is still a possibility.

Is Task Renewed for Season 2?

Yes! HBO renewed Task for a second season, with Ruffalo set to return as FBI agent Tom Brandis. No word yet on how the story will continue, but it’s possible that Brandis will be assigned to a new case with an all-new task force. Robbie’s (Tom Pelphrey) death was a significant loss for viewers in episode 6, but Anthony Grasso (Fabien Frankel) and Aleah Clinton (Thuso Mbedu) survived the end of the series.

Here’s an idea: A crossover with Ingelsby’s other HBO drama set in Delco: Mare of Easttown. Believe it or not, Ingelsby has already alluded to the shows sharing a connection.

“I think there were still more stories to be told about people in Delaware County,” Ingelsby told The Hollywood Reporter in early September. “They exist in the same world, so it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if Mare (played by Kate Winslet) walked into a Wawa that Tom (played by Ruffalo) was in. I don’t have a story in mind that’s a crossover, but I love the idea of their worlds intersecting.”

I wouldn’t bet on it, though anything is possible now! If Ingelsby isn’t ready to close the door on Task, then he must have something great up his sleeve for season 2.

“If people respond to Task and keep responding to Task, I’d love to tell more stories about this place, because I love writing about this place,” Ingelsby told Esquire in October. “I do feel like I have more stories to tell.”
