If you’ve ever fallen down the rabbit hole of makeup TikTok, chances are you’ve come across at least one of beauty influencer Mikayla Nogueira’s viral videos. Well-known almost as much for her artistic prowess as her signature Boston accent, the content creator recently expanded her beauty know-how with the launch of her brand, POV Beauty, last March. “As for the mission of the brand, it’s kind of, it’s all in the name, right?” Nogueira tells Bazaar. “It’s designed to allow people to share their point of view, and everyone has a different beauty point of view, and I want that to be present with everything we launch. Skin prep allows you to kind of curate your own regimen, which is your point of view. You might hear me use that a lot.”
POV Beauty started with five streamlined skincare products created to enhance customers’ natural glow while prepping their faces for makeup. This week, the brand entered new territory with the release of its Amp (K)its, combination sets featuring a contour pencil and plumping oil to provide equal parts hydration and long-wearing lip color. “I think my mission is to bring makeup back,” Nogueira explains. “I think for a long time, especially as COVID happened, people kind of lost interest and lost that creative spark. I really want to bring that urge and that energy back.” As POV Beauty progresses, the founder aims to be even more intentional about its inclusion of color in its launches. The brand also has an underlying mission of placing full, red carpet-worthy glam back in the forefront of top makeup trends.
Nogueira is ready to say goodbye to the clean girl aesthetic, and wants you to, too. “The products are designed for makeup, like, I want you to look at someone and see that they’re wearing makeup. I want people to really feel transformed by products,” the creator adds. “I myself am definitely, like, anti-clean girl, I literally can’t do it. I just grew up as a glam girl. And for me, knowing how doing makeup like this can make someone feel is very important to me. I know that when I see someone wearing a look like this, it means that they took time for themselves, which I think is really, really special.”
Here, Bazaar catches up with Nogueira to learn more about POV Beauty’s new Amp (K)its, and why you’ll probably never catch her in red lipstick, along with a short list of her go-to blushes, and the one holy-grail favorite the expert thinks everyone needs in their regular makeup rotation.
What was the first makeup product you remember buying or using?
The first makeup product I ever purchased—and by purchased I mean my mom got it for me—was a four-pan eyeshadow quad. She handed me an Avon catalog and had a friend who sold it. At the time, they were really known for these eyeshadows, and I’ll never forget the first one I picked: It was a little black quad, and it had a blue eyeshadow, a black eyeshadow, a shimmer shadow, and a white. And yeah, that was my very first product. I was probably 10 or 11 at that time, so my mom was really open. She’s a professional painter, so makeup is not that different in a sense. She was all in on me wearing makeup really, really young, because she knew it was like creative expression. So, right off the bat, she was buying me makeup all the time.
Who or what is your biggest makeup inspiration?
My biggest makeup inspiration is definitely Mario Dedivanovic, who’s known as Makeup by Mario. I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know him and can actually call him a friend, which is unbelievable for me to be able to say, as someone who grew up idolizing Kim K. I had her selfie book and anything she did I followed, and I’ve always loved her glam. And love Mario’s story, how he came from nothing and turned himself into something, and developed his signature glam. He will leave a legacy behind, and I think that’s very cool.
What’s your number one holy-grail makeup product?
My number one holy-grail makeup product—and it literally has been for years—is the NARS Soft Matte Complete Full Coverage Longwear Concealer. I use it for so many things: To cover blemishes, acne scarring. I use it under my eyes if I want to matte, full coverage finish. I use it every day to carve out my eyebrows. I use it as an eyeshadow primer. I’ve used it for literally 10 years. It’s the one thing I’ve bought over and over and over. And if anyone hasn’t tried it, I highly recommend it. It’s that staple product everybody needs.
How did you learn to do your makeup?
OK, so I technically learned how to do makeup when I was eight. My dad worked at a haunted house, and as young as eight, he’d take me there every single day after work because, couldn’t afford daycare, so he’d just take me to work with him. I loved watching the special effects makeup get done. And then I worked at this haunted house for 10 years—from the age of eight to 18—and by 15, I was old enough to go to the makeup room and say, “Hey, can I help you with this? I want to assist.” So, I began doing special effects and Halloween makeup on the cast, and they thought I did a really good job. And the next year, they asked if I wanted my own chair, and I said, “Sure, why not?” I literally had no idea what I was doing. I’d never done anyone’s makeup, but they had confidence in me that I could do it. I had my own chair for like, three years at this haunted house, and I learned about makeup by literally doing Halloween makeup. I don’t really get to tell that story very much.
But then, by the time I was 18, I got really into watching YouTubers like Jeffree Star, Manny MUA, James Charles, Nikki Tutorials, Tati Westbrook, you name it, I was watching it. And that’s when I got into that 2016 to 2019-style makeup, which I kind of still do today. I definitely have a more modern take on that; I’ve fused 2016 to 2019 makeup with, I don’t want to say clean girl, because my makeup is not clean girl, but it’s definitely clean lines—very blended. And then I got my job at Ulta Beauty when I was in college, and that is where I started to get really serious about it, and learning the logistics of makeup and products, and learning about brands. So, yeah, I definitely have 360-degree learning.
Are you Team Primer or Team No Primer?
Oh, of course, I’m Team Primer—we have Glaze It, which is my take on a primer. I think primer can be an unnecessary step, unless it has two things: One, polymers, which help blur the skin you want to blur. That’s what people need is blurred pores, refined texture, and a smooth canvas. And then number two is grip: You want your makeup to grip to your face and last all day.
How many lip balms or oils are currently in your bag?
I’ll be honest, since I launched Amp It, it’s the only lip balm I use. I probably have like 100 of them in my house, and you can probably play hide and seek with these. My bedside drawer probably has 10 of them in it.
What’s your skin type and foundation preference?
I have very, very dry skin, especially on my body. I have the type of dry skin, and I’m speaking presently—like right now, my skin hurts. It’s so painfully dry. But I don’t like to be insanely glowy to the point where I look like an oil slick, but I definitely need a hydrating foundation. Or, if I want to use a matte foundation, which I did today—I’m wearing the L’Oreal Paris Infalliable Pro Matte—I need the skin prep, and that’s where POV comes in. But if I don’t skin prep and I wear a matte foundation, my skin looks awful.
How often do you clean your brushes?
Oh my god, so, complicated answer. I only use a makeup brush once, and then I put it in the “This needs to be washed” pile. I’m not reusing the brushes. But if you saw my beauty room right now, the sink has probably 1,000 makeup brushes in it that I need to wash, and that’s the problem with having the amount of makeup brushes I have. I will use it once and then put it in the discard, “need to wash this” pile, and then I’ll have another one that’s clean. And when I finally have time to wash my brushes, there are over 1,000 to wash. I travel so much, and every trip I go on, I bring a fresh set of clean brushes, but by the time I’m done with all those trips, it just piles up. Same with a BeautyBlender, you’ll never catch me using a dirty BeautyBlender.
What are your thoughts on blush, and which ones do you love right now?
I love blush, I think everybody has been blush addicted over the last three years, honestly—it’s the longest standing trend I’ve seen to wear blush. Right now, I’m really into those cream-to-powder formulas where, if you touch it, it kind of feels like Play-Doh, or just really squishy. You can push your finger into it, but then when it dries, it’s a powder. My favorites right now are the Kylie Cosmetics Hybrid Blush, the Tower 28 powder blushes, and I really, really love the YSL Beauty powder blushes—they have a really beautiful shade range. Packaging is amazing, formula is super blurring. I’m also into the Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Matte Bouncy Blush, and I love the iconic viral ones from Dior. But yeah, I really love powder blush, shockingly.
Are you a highlighter or bronzer fan?
If I had to choose, like you can only ever use bronzer again or you can only ever use highlighter, I would choose bronzer 1,000 percent. I wear a lot of bronzer—a ridiculous amount, actually. People often say my makeup style is similar to the UK style because of how much bronzer they wear there. I’m very pale when my skin tone is very one-dimensional, so I love bronzer because it just makes me look a little bit more alive and warm. I do three different types of bronzer products in my routine: A liquid or cream contour, a liquid or cream bronzer, and then a powder bronzer, so I really like it.
What is your relationship with eyeshadow?
It’s confusing. If you’ve been watching me for five years, the first three years of my career, I had a crazy, colorful eye look on every single day. And the genuine reason I stopped doing that is because those looks take like three hours—the eye alone. Now that I have a brand and so much going on, I don’t have an extra three hours on top of everything else to do the eye looks. I will say that I crave that every day, but I need to figure that out and find a balance, because I’m deprived. But I’m obsessed with the new Patrick Ta Major Dimension Essential Artistry Edit eyeshadow palettes, they’re amazing.
Some days, it can feel like you need a degree from RISD to apply eyeliner. Do you usually reach for pencil, liquid, or gel formulas, and what are some of your favorites?
I’m so passionate about makeup that I like to explore all of those options. My favorite pencil liners are Urban Decay’s 24/7 liners. I love those so much, I’ve been using them for years. And then my favorite liquid formula on the higher end is the Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Liner, and on the more affordable end is the Essence Lash Princess Liquid Liner. One thing that they have in common is that they’re both dip. I prefer using dip eyeliner because it lasts so much longer, not only on the eye but in the actual tube. Whereas I hate eyeliner pens, I just find that they dry out and drag—I don’t like those. Another favorite that’s more artistry-focused is Inglot gel liner. If I want a really intense eyeliner look, I’ll use that with their Duraline liquid—I’ll use one drop and swirl it around—I like to play, it just depends on the look.
What are some of your go-to mascaras, and would you typically consider yourself a volume or length seeker?
My issue with mascara, generally, is that I have a sunken under-eye—I have a lot of makeup on right now, so you can’t tell. But with like 90 percent of the mascara I use, it bleeds underneath, and I’ll have a literal black smudge under my eye. I’ve found very few mascaras that do not do that to me. It’s interesting, because of the two that don’t, one is actually a dupe: the Benefit Roller Lash Mascara and the e.l.f. Cosmetics Lash ‘N Roll Mascara, which is a dupe of the Benefit version. They literally duped it because those are the only two that don’t bleed on me; I don’t know why. Whatever they did with that formula, if you’re someone who struggles with mascara bleeding, those are your go-tos.
Now let’s talk about brows: What are some of your favorite products of all time?
My favorite brow gel ever is the Rare Beauty Brow Harmony Flexible Lifting and Laminating Eyebrow Gel; it’s exceptional. I will say, I don’t have thick brows, I have thin brow hairs, but I have brow, for sure. If you have a really thick, coarse brow, you probably won’t like that one, but if you have brows similar to mine, you will love it. I also love a brow pen—the NYX Professional Cosmetics Lift & Snatch Brow Pen is my personal favorite—and right now, for brow pencil, I’m actually using Rare Beauty. Rare Beauty, actually, is so underrated for brows.
Are you a fan of red lipstick?
No. [laughs] For many years, I’ve only worn a nude lip, and the main reason for that was because I would always do really bold eye looks. And when I do a bold eye look and a bold lip, I’m like, “Whoa, this is like, way too much.” And I like the nude lip, because I feel like you focus less on the lip and more on the eyes, whereas, like, if I had just mascara on right now, I think a red lip would look really nice because the lip would be the focus. But that’s the only time you will catch me wearing a red lip.
Are there any other fun makeup staples you’re obsessed with, like lip liners, highlighters, freckle pens, or face gems?
Oh my god, yeah, I have so many staples. I love the Sacheu Beauty peel-off lip liner stain—I think those are actually amazing, and they last a long time. They’re really nice on natural days when you just want to emphasize the lines of your lips and give them a little pop. I also am obsessed with the One/Size Powder Melt Glass Setting Spray. It’s really nice to spray in between each step of your makeup routine to rehydrate the skin. I also love a faux freckle, and use the Freck Beauty Freck XL pen, and like I said, those Patrick Ta eyeshadow palettes are a staple. Also, my favorite lashes right now are Lilly Lashes—if you like lashes that are bold and bring drama, try those. And my go-to powder right now that I use every single day is the Huda Beauty Easy Bake Loose Baking Powder. There just is no better powder than that. I use it everywhere. I always bake under my eyes, which is why they’re really, really bright. I’ll use a powder puff and bake a lot, and then use what’s left on the powder puff and set the forehead, chin, and sides of the face.
If you could use only one makeup product for an entire day, what would it be?
The entire day? That’s going to be Amp It because if I have dry lips, I literally go insane.
