Miley Cyrus may have indulged fans with the nostalgia-fueled Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special, which debuted on Hulu and Disney+ this week, but she’s not finished honoring the iconic era just yet.
Capping off a week of anniversary celebrations, the Hannah Montana star released a new single and accompanying music video on Friday that pays tribute to her younger self. Titled “Younger You,” the track is an emotional nod to her inner child and girlhood as a whole.
The video features Cyrus driving through Hollywood in her modernized Hannah Montana wig and a pair of oversized sunglasses, taking inspiration from the 2000s era. As she drives through Los Angeles, the visuals weave in nostalgic throwback clips from the 2009 Hannah Montana movie, revisiting a teenage Cyrus at the beginning of her career.
“Somewhere along the way, we lost touch / We used to be so happy just because / I know you had to go eventually / But don’t forget about me, don’t forget about me, no,” Cyrus sings in the chorus of the ballad.
On the outro, she closes out the track with the poignant lyrics, “Hey, you, it’s younger you / When you’re standing on the stars, just don’t forget who you are.”
Posting the video to Instagram, Cyrus declared the song as a thank-you to the fans, writing, “Younger me has loved celebrating 20 years of Hannah Montana with you. This song is yours as a thank you for the life we’ve grown through together. I love you always.”
