Pioneer Woman Ree Drummond’s Unexpected Church Moment with Sofia That’s Melting Hearts Everywhere—You Won’t Believe What Happened Next!
Have you ever noticed how some skills just stay with you for life, like a well-trained fighter’s instinct? Well, Ree Drummond showed us exactly that when she snuggled up to her little granddaughter Sofia during church, turning a fussy moment into a heartwarming scene. This past weekend, the whole Drummond crew gathered in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, to celebrate the Cavalcade — the world’s largest amateur rodeo — where the kids danced the night away and still found their way to Sunday service. Amid the hymns and holy echoes, Sofia, just one year old, had her moments of fussiness, but Ree’s grandma mojo and a little help from grandad Ladd’s singing sealed the deal for a peaceful reprieve. It’s a beautiful reminder that family bonds and old tricks—along with a bit of harmony—can conquer even the toughest crowd, especially when it includes a tiny one testing patience in church pews. Ree Drummond snuggled up to her granddaughter Sofia in church yesterday, proving she still has the touch!
This weekend, all of the Drummond clan was in town. The kids came back home for the Cavalcade, the world’s largest amateur rodeo, that’s held at the fairgrounds in Pawhuska, Okla. The kids spent the night dancing and watching the rodeo, but still made it to church on Sunday, Ree said.
Alex, Mauricio and Sofia joined the group, too! The one-year-old attended church with her whole family but was a little whiney at first.
“During church, Sofia was a little fussy,” Ree said on The Pioneer Woman. “So of course I gave Alex the look. It’s a simple, plaintive expression that basically conveys ‘Hand that baby to me NOW, I am her grandma and I need her on my lap.’”
As Sofia sat on her grandmother’s lap with her grandad Ladd by her side, she started to calm down, but only for a moment until she started getting fussy again. Ree, her husband and the rest of the church started singing “What a Friend We Have in Jesus,” which quickly calmed Sofia down.

“Immediately, Sofia seemed to relax and come along for the ride,” Ree wrote. And although Ree was singing low to harmonize and calm the baby, she doesn’t think it was her singing that did the trick!
“But it wasn’t my expert (heh heh) harmonizing that calmed Sofia down. It was Ladd, aka Pa-Pa. She locked in and listened to him sing and bought us a good four minutes of utter contentment,” she wrote. “New baby trick unlocked!”
Alex, Ree’s oldest daughter, married Mauricio Scott in 2021 at the Drummond family ranch in Oklahoma. The stunning wedding day was full of flowers, friends and family. The couple had their first daughter Sofia on December 18, 2024.
“Sofia was born around 2:30 in the morning, and she is perfect. I’m saying that with as much objectivity as I can. But I’m not kidding…she is perfect,” Ree wrote when her granddaughter was born. “Thank you, God, for Alex and Mauricio, and for my beautiful granddaughter Sofia Marie Scott!”
