Ryan Coogler’s X-Files Drop: The Untold Secret That’ll Shake Your Mind and Boost Your Hustle—Are You Ready?
Is it just me, or does the timing of Ryan Coogler’s X-Files reboot feel like the universe is sending us an alien-themed gift? After the buzz around Jordan Peele’s Nope, it’s obvious we’re all craving that eerie mix of suspense and extraterrestrial mystery. And with Steven Spielberg hinting at Disclosure Day, it seems Hollywood knows exactly what we want — thrillers that make our skin crawl and minds race. Coogler’s track record speaks volumes, having crafted worlds from Black Panther’s fierce heroes to the chilling vibes of Sinners’ vampires. But here’s the kicker: this reboot isn’t just another remake — it’s personal, steeped in memories of him watching the original with his mom, and inspired by TV legends like Vince Gilligan. So, can this fresh take on The X-Files capture the magic and skepticism that made the original a cult classic? One thing’s certain: I’m hyped, and maybe a little on edge. LEARN MORE
Ryan Coogler’s X-Files reboot couldn’t arrive at a better time. It was clear after the critical response to Jordan Peele’s Nope that audiences were dying for a classic thriller about aliens. (It seems Steven Spielberg also picked that hint up with his next project: Disclosure Day.) So, after tackling everything from Black Panther‘s superheroes to Sinners‘ vampires, I’m sure his X-Files reboot for Hulu is in good hands. Besides, as Coogler tells it, it’s as personal a project for him as when he dedicated Creed to his father.
“[The X-Files] is what I used to watch with my mom,” Coogler said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast in January. “It’s one of the most beautiful American television shows ever made.”
The original series, which ran for 11 seasons and two feature films since 1993, followed two FBI agents who investigated cases of exterritorial life and unsolved paranormal activity. The series starred David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as they worked through “monster of the week” cases while solving a larger mystery involving a potential alien invasion. The series also gave Breaking Bad and Pluribus creator Vince Gilligan his start directing for TV, which Coogler says was a major inspiration for his upcoming series.
“When you can capture something that you were influenced by and make something totally new, and any time you watch a TV show or a movie with a skeptic paired with a believer and they try to solve a case, like True Detective season 1, it comes up so many times,” he continued. “And that show gave us Vince Gilligan. I got to talk to him about how to make television because of this show, so I’m hyped.”
Coogler’s X-Files will star Himesh Patel (The Odyssey) and Danielle Deadwyler (Euphoria) as two new agents, according to Variety, with the director seeking to fully reboot the series instead of having Patel and Deadwyler play new iterations of Duchovny and Anderson’s characters. There’s no release date just yet, but Coogler reportedly reached out to Anderson, who acknowledged that they’ve had a few conversations since about his plans for the series.
“The pilot script is really good,” Anderson recently told a fan panel at Awesome Con. “I would say, have an open mind and give it a chance, because it’s gonna be f**king cool. It really is.”
