There’s a lot riding on Shōgunseason 2. The hit FX drama starring Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai adapted a 1975 historical-fiction best seller set in Edo Japan and later swept the Emmys to become one of the most awarded seasons of television in history. Anticipation for season 2—or, as cocreator Justin Marks calls it, “part two”—is high. But what will the next season of Shōgun actually explore? And what old and new faces will appear?

“Like the first season, I think part two is a really sweeping, beautiful, and you’re never going to see it coming, entirely unexpected love story,” Marks told Varietyduring a Disney+ originals preview at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, which took place in November 2025. “There are battle sequences that we’re putting together now in part two. I don’t think you’ve ever seen anything like this kind of scale, this kind of tragedy, and this kind of humanity.”

Season 2 will jump ahead ten years into the story, which ended when victory felt certain for Sanada’s Lord Toranaga. Sanada will return for season 2 and will also serve as an executive producer. Cosmo Jarvis will also return as John Blackthorne, aka “the Anjin.” According to FX, the second season entered production in January in Vancouver.

According to Marks, the time jump accounts for the lengthy period of time audiences are now waiting for the show’s return. “This show is going to take us a little while to produce,” he said. “It’s not coming out one year later, and there’s this thing that drives me crazy when you watch a show that ended three years ago and you get into season 2 and it’s like five minutes later. We’re trying to use this jump as a way to come back to our characters again for the very first time, to see them, to see what’s changed in their lives over the course of the last ten years, and to rediscover them.”

Since season 2 extends past the story of James Clavell’s originalnovel, Marks and his wife, cocreator Rachel Kondo, partnered with Clavell’s daughter Michaela to make sure that their work didn’t stray too far from her father’s vision.

“We have real history, so we know what happens next,” Sanada told Esquire before the Golden Globes in 2025. “But we don’t want to just follow the history. We’re trying to create original entertainment. There’s so many ideas coming, and we’re not just focused on season 2. Of course, we want a surprise for audiences. You can never guess what’s going to happen.”

Let’s run down everything else we know so far about the future of Shōgun.

Is Shōgun Returning for Season 2?

Yes! As FX revealed in the official press release: “FX, Hulu and the Estate of James Clavell are working to extend the critically acclaimed global hit drama Shōgun, moving forward to develop the saga with two additional seasons of the drama series.”

Clavell’s Shōgun novel was more or less adapted in full for the FX series, but as Sanada mentioned, there’s still plenty of Japanese history that the show can turn to for inspiration. For example: After gaining the title of shōgun, Ieyasu Tokugawa (the real-life inspiration for Sanada’s Lord Toranaga) consolidated power for 15 years. At 65 years old, Tokugawa faced a new task: successfully turning the shogunate over to his son, Hidetada. He also maintained a friendship with John Blackthorne’s own real-life counterpart, William Adams, and later laid siege to Osaka Castle when the Taikō’s heir finally came of age. This gives us a pretty decent idea of what might happen in season 2.

“There’s a lot of great conspiracy theory in history, a lot of different theories about ‘Oh, it was said that this went on, but this really went on,’ and those little darker corners are what we’ve really enjoyed exploring,” Marks told The Hollywood Reporterin June 2024. “The third season is really an ending. We know where it starts, and we know where it ends, and we know who is there on that journey. We’re just focusing on part two right now to really make sure we can get to that point. But part two is, as second chapters go, kind of a darker chapter.”
